Great Radio Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
I bought this radio almost a year ago after deciding to get back into VHF/UHF mobile work. I use it almost everyday and have found it to be a rock solid and reliable radio. Great transmit and receive audio. Only issue is what I consider clumsy programming. Not intuitve like many radios. I wound up getting the RT Systems software which made setting up the radio very easy.

Scanner works great too. When I don't feel like talking I listen to trains, planes and boats along with public safety . . .

Since you don't program every day I give this rig a big 5!

I LOVE IT! Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
I Love it? Why not a 5? Well, my beef is the remote mounting kit Yaesu wants you to spend $60 on. I made my own (looks better than theirs!) for about $5. The radio is a solid performer. Little intermod (this radio was the replacemnt for my old Icom 2720 intermod machine) and good receive. The internal speaker is not so great. The radio is still my favorite entry level radio, none the less. If you are looking for your first rig and don't know which way to go...THIS IS YOUR RADIO!

Good Radio/Hard to Program Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have owned this radio for approx. one year. It is a solid radio. Send and recieve are great. It is bright and easy to see the freq.information.

My only issue with this is that it is difficult to program all the memory features. The basic memory funtion is not too bad I was able to program 63 repeaters in an hour or so. However, it gets much more complicated when trying to program memory banks. I worked on it over and over and still cannot completly understand the process. Perhaps it is the way the manual is written... who knows

Great Radio Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I bought this radio after a friend of mine recommended it. I have to agree that this unit is a great choice.

The only issues I have are that it seems to scan more slowly than other radios and that the menu functions such as pl tone settings and others seem to be a little too deep into the menu to be able to set quickly.

Other than those issues, I am very happy with the radio.

Excellent so far!! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Bought the rig last week after the FT-5100 I have been running (VERY HARD) mobile for the last 10 years began it's decay (getting lower and lower power output and display began to falter some). I sure wish Yaesu was smart enough back when making the 5100 to have made the heat sink as big as on the 7800 and made the fan work like the 7800 too! At any rate, I confirmed the 7800 would accept memories and checked power out on each band and then did the mod. What an easy mod! TX audio is great and the RX audio is just above average. I still miss having the dual rx and crossband rpt of the 5100, but will prob get an 8800 to take it's place...in the meantime....Good to see Yaesu making good radios again and at a decent price. Enough time after the joining of Standard has passed I suppose. Man I always hated Standard, especially their commercial stuff! 73 NE4ME

good first radio Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
First off, I think the Hyper Memory feature is wonderful! What do I use it for? Well, I set up 3 banks in the radio: a bank to monitor FRS/GMRS, a bank to monitor Air traffic, and a bank to monitor my local HAM repeaters. When I travel, I will also set up a bank with the repeaters along my travel path to keep in touch. By setting a bank in scan mode, then saving the settings in a hyper memory, I can quickly select air, FRS, or HAM listening. VERY convenient.

While obviously, the air and FRS are read-only, it is still very useful to monitor the FRS band when travelling with other people (the roof antenna is more sensitive and can hear calls from further away than walkie-talkies can). I can also use the radio for plane-spotting at the airport.

The built-in speaker is not too bad, but there is one flaw in the audio design: the ext speaker jack does not have a 300Hz high-pass filter, so PL tones get through to the ext speaker. I need to make a crossover to fix that.

Programming the radio is a chore; the menus are not well-organized. For example, the PL tone frequency item is nowhere near the entry to select the tone type. The repeater split, direction, and transmit freq are similarly not grouped together. Why is this? Also, the procedure to program the bank operations is not very clear. I would much rather have bank selection be another menu item.

This is offset by the fact that I can program 4 of the handset buttons and one of the front panel buttons. So PL tone and repeater offset options are now just 1 button press away.

All in all, well worth the price. My next radio will definitely be another Yaesu.
