I spent the $$ to get one of these kits despite all the rumblings about breaking the laws of physics, being a hoax, etc. The 1st one I got turned out to be defective, according to the mfr., and I returned the kit for replacement. Excellent customer service. The 2nd one went together more smoothly. Same documentation (which isn't bad) and clever packaging. Maybe the assembly went so well because I had built the one earlier... Anyway, it does show a good SWR on the 20 meter band, or at least most of it. So the Q is good, it's not a dummy load in any conventional sense. You can't check resonance with an SWR analyzer though (so says the factory, but without an explanation); you have to use the rig. And, a tuner is verboten, too, but it's also unneeded. I did not witness any feedline radiation, and did not use the gimmicky tuning shield nor did I connect a ground. I wanted the unit to go portable with me as a true backpack antenna; throw a line up into a tree, hoist up the antenna, and get on the air. Well, all except the last part happened. The antenna transports easily and can be put up quickly. It just doesn't radiate worth a hoot. I guess it's about what you'd expect from an antenna this small, for this band. An end-fed sloper would work (and does work) much better, costs less, and is lighter. Sorry, Ted, but this EH Backpacker is really not worth the money.
