It matches the FT-897D it came with fine. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
The MH31 microphone came with my Yaesu FT-897D rig. I find that the number 2 position for the switch on the rear of the microphone sounds the best for my voice. I've always received good reports and I've listened to it on FM when my son talked to me and it sounded good. On SSB I've listened to myself on another receiver with headphones and it sounded fine. My voice does not carry well but it seems to drive the microphone and rig fine.

I do not have any RF feedback problems to cause distortion and I would not blame the microphone if I did.

Also, I'm mostly a CW operator so take this review for what it's worth ;-)

It was free.. Time Owned: more than 12 months.
It came with my FT-857D. Audio reports were good on FM and okay on SSB...have tried many audio settings with this mic and nothing helps. It sounds "okay". Well it was free with the rig, it's not a Heil.

chinese crap Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
This is the microphone that came with the radio.

I have had many QSOs and contacts, but on the occasion someone tells me that my audio is horrible, that it sounds like I have rf on the mic. Some people say that my audio is bad, yet understandable and tolerable.

It is a shame that Yeasu could not furnish a decent mic.

Muffled audio Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
This microphone was supplied with my FT-897D.

Unfortunately the frequency response is not suited to my voice, which seems to have a peak at around 800Hz.

Position 2 gives the best results, with the low frequencies being reduced; however the speech quality still sounds muffled.

I did some investigation with ‘Spectrum lab’ running on my PC. I believe there is a fundamental problem with the design of the slotted vents on the face of the microphone. This seems to cause standing wave patterns, which put ‘notches’ in the frequency response. You may notice this if you compare the variation in speech quality when you speak directly into the front of the microphone, from the sides, or from above or below. Each position gives a different tonal quality.

I tried a few different microphone inserts before realising this problem. So I now use a different hand mic or boom headset with electret capsules, which give me much better audio reports.

Best for the Yaesu FT1000MP Mark5 HF Transceiver Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I tried some other Mics with my FT1000MP Mark5 Field: Kenwood MC80,Peiker Fistmic and 2 Sadelta Echo Master Plus. The Mic which came with the Transceiver, the MH31 sounded best. On its back, there is a small switcher with 2 discrete Positions. I used the Position one, where is much more bass and highs in the Audio than in Position 2. Got the best sound. That Mic isnt that loud but for that there is a Speechprocessor in the Radio. No need for the Yaesu MD200 Mic for FT1000. MH31 on FT1000MP Mark5 Field sound very best.
