Good but not Great Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
This is the best sounding speaker I have had. I would not have paid $150-175 for a new one but it came with the FT1000mp mrk v field. Filters not much but if you can find one for $100 or so I think you will like it.

Today's SP-8 Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
I had one 5 years ago and it looked nice but really did'nt sound that great. I sold that one later. I baught a brand new one a few months ago and there is a big differance. It sounds great. Use it with my 920. Tried it on my vr-5000 reciever. Sounded fantastic. So.... I ordered another one. Sounds great. I would not buy a used one. Thanks Yaesu. (AC5DF)

Works and sounds fine Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Hello,

I'm not sure why some of the negative posters rated the speaker as they did but I just bought one to complement my recently acquired FT-920 and I find the acoustics of the speaker as well as the filtering effective. Perhaps I have sharper hearing or haven't lost most of it at Rock Concerts. I was never a head-banger.

I like the ability to mute audio from the front panel as well as the 2 headphone jacks that don't drag down the output if both are being used.

I give the looks a 5 and performance a 5, price a 4. Well, we all know that the bread and butter of the equipment manufacturers is in the accessories.

I suggest that those who are unsure of the speaker give it a listen and a chance. It is not entirely inconceivable that Yaesu changed the speaker driver somewhere down the manufacturing chain.

Good quality speaker after adding some stuffing material Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Bought the unit today and added some speaker stuffing material inside the unit.
Did some comparison against the Kenwood SP-23 and SP-31 speakers I own while qso-ing with N3KS using USB mode on 14MHz.
Sound is OK to me, filters are working great and no tinny sound at all.
A 4/5 rating because price is at a high level but so is the FT-1000MP MK V.

Rubbish! Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
I now use my old SP-901 which is far better for SSB/CW audio. The SP 8 has too much bass. It looks nice in the line up but is not worth the money, I'm very disappointed, expected much better performance for the price.

n.g. for casual operating Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I bought one of these to complement my FT-920. I am a casual operator of CW and AM, rarely operating SSB or FM. I find the audio from this speaker to be appallingly bad.

I went to Radio Shack and bought a 'RCA' 2-way bookshelf speaker (cat. no. 40-5022) and can report the sound from this set-up is nice.

Maybe the dx'ers or contesters can find value in the SP-8; I sure can't and have to recommend prospective purchasers look elsewhere.

Great Speaker Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I bought one for my FT-897d and I really think it improved the sound a lot. I don't have problems with "tinny" sound and the filters works great.

Needs Damping! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Didn't sound like the best speaker in the world when I first plugged it in. Read other reports here on Eham and followed the advice given. I cut a four inch thick piece of foam to fit in the unit directly behind the speaker and it is now a different piece of kit. Great sound quality and now a good partner for my Mark V. The filters now make a contribution to the sound quality. With the damping fitted I would recommend the SP 8, without it - forget it!!

Excellent audio. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I just plugged in a SP-8 to my station and I found the audio very easy to copy and much more readable (I never liked the top firing speakers inside the rigs, with the exception of Mark V FT-1000MP which has the finest receive audio I ever heard). I was hesitant to get myself one after I read the review but I think it was worth the money as it improved the look and added the ability to switch between my two base station radios (the other being FT-847). The analog filter roll-offs are clear and is quite effective, although I use the digital filters most of the time. I did not modify the speaker and it worked excellent straight out of the box. I would recommend it to anyone.

Great Speaker! Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I picked up an SP8 for my FT-897's. I did not experience any tinny sound, and the filters worked great. I wouldn't buy one of these new because of the price, so I got mine from E-bay. I've compared it with my SP-980, and an Icom SP3, and the SP8 sound better (to my ears) than the others. I also like the smaller size (compared to the SP-980) so it doesn't take up so much room on my desk.
