Very nice smt project Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I got this kit without much smt experience and with some trepidation. My eyes hung in there and I was able to put it together with just a radio shack 15w iron and 10x eye loupe. Steve even included some .015 solder in the package. Even though it had a few bugs and I had to send it back for processor upgrade I would recommend it for someone looking for a great building experience. It is also ideal for the trail and for the once a month Spartan Sprints sponsored by ARS. When the lithium AAA batteries come out, this little radio will be the cat's meow for the sprints. Even thought about getting another just to have another one. Ya never know if it will be offered again in the future.

"The ultimate trail friendly rig" Small, light and efficient. It's a really neat kit, four bands: 80, 40, 30 & 20, only cw ("Tunes lower 150 KHz of the bands."), enclosure included, 8 oz.(with batteries in it), ~3" x ~5" x ~1", sucks up a whopping 25 ma on receive, will run on 6 to 12 volts, ~2.5 watts out with 9 volts(i.e. 6 AAA's), ~5watts @ 12V, has RIT and built in iambic keyer, message memory, audio band pass and sidetone peaked @ 600hz. Unfortunately, antenna, tuner, paddle/key & batteries are NOT included. You can get the PDF manual off his web site.
It's a digital marvel, designed and kitted by a bearded digital wizard in little house by a bridge over a rocky river in Berlin, New Hampsire, so that he could take it with him while camping and hiking on the Appalachian Trail.
Alternative: the very nice (seen but not owned) Elecraft KX1 (nice, but also.....more $)
