Very good headphones for BOTH radio/audio Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have owned these head phones for years, they are great for audio plus ham radio as well, very comfy to wear but the ear pads after a while do wear out. I ordered a pair of replacement ear pads from Brainwave, adds another $20 to the price of the original $99 but they are perforated and very comfy to wear so we will see how many more years I get out of these now.
On a note these are far better than the Heil Pro Set 6 I used to own, yes the boom headset is nice but when you are picking out those weak stations during a contest the Sony's step far ahead of anything Heil has to offer. Instead of boom/headsets I went with a Sampson adjustable boom for my desk paired with a modified PR781 which works soo much better with the FTDX101D. And Yes I have owned the AKG 240's and several other headphones, the Sony's shine.

Good Audio - Decent Build Quality Time Owned: more than 12 months.
The Sony MDR-7506s are good 'closed back' type headphones.

Like almost all Sony headphones they are prone to the dreaded ear pad 'flakies' after a few years. (When you see even a few tiny black specs immediately begin keeping the headphones in a plastic bag until you get replacement ear pads ... because when the ear pads deteriorate further they deposit the tiny black specs on everything.)

The MDR-7506s are of decent build quality; treat them with the same level of care you'd give to an expensive Morse key and they will last for years-and-years.

The 7506s offer reasonably sound isolation from the local environment but don't expect them to approach the isolation provided by aviation-grade headphones worn in small aircraft.

The MDR-7506 Headphones offer good to very good sound quality though I think that 'open back' headphones can provide slightly better quality if well designed and built. (But, of course, with 'open back' headphones you'll need to be in a quiet environment to use them.)

All-in-all the Sony MDR-7506 Headphones are very good especially given that they're available (as-of June 2022) for less than a hundred Dollars.

(Update 22 March 2023)

Compared to the (almost physically identical) Sony MDR-V6 Headphones (no longer manufactured but readily available on the used market) I believe that the MDR-7506s are 'brighter' with slightly accentuated bass and treble.

Ideal for ESSB Audio, great flat quality headphones. Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Great headphones, with flat audio coverage, I use them in my Kenwood TS-990 and TS-950SDX with great results.
They are comfortable and their sound is very good.
The only bad thing is that the pads wear out very quickly, the good thing is that there are spare parts and of better quality, there are several options for pads. it all depends on taste.
For ESSB audio, it's the best, by far!

Ok for the first 4 years. Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I bought my MDR7506 headphones in 2018. Used them for 4 years and agree withj all the reviewers, good audio quality, light and can be worn for hours on end. Downside came when one of the drivers failed. Now off to buy something different.

Top notch Professional Quality cans Time Owned: more than 12 months.
This is my second pair of these headphones, the other set must have "grown legs" and somehow disappeared. By far the best headphones I have ever used. I can pick out nuances and stuff I would never hear through my speakers ( which are quite good, thank you ). No fatigue from wearing these beautiful "cans" for hours on end. Perfect for High Fidelity Audio and also great for plugging into my HF rigs. Buy Them!

Good headphones for listening critically to audio Time Owned: more than 12 months.
As Jim (KX2T) notes, these are good headphones for both audio and Ham Radio. They reproduce a very good sound....NOT colored...just very good with clean detail and no masking. I use them to listen to folks audio critically....to include, my own audio (using the monitor function). It gives good "honest" reproduction of your voice.

Best headphones for ham radio I've ever used/owned. Price (under 100) is reasonable for the quality. As noted, earpads are replaceable.

Fine Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Hey, the price on the MDR-7506 is not $170. A good shopper can find them on the net for $99 or even as low as $89.

I've had these cans for 15 years. Bought them for pro-audio work. Sony has been making them for ages, and probably will for a long time.

They do just fine for ham listening as well. Pretty high sensitivity -- c. 105 dB if I remember right, so you should always have plenty of volume, even on rigs with low audio output.

Not Durable Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have owned this headset for 2 years and found it to be adequate but not durable. The sound is fine for communication, but they feel cheap and the ear cushions are peeling off.

Agree 100% to 5 stars Time Owned: more than 12 months.
These Sony MDR-7506 headphones are my favorite for music or radio so I second all the great comments.
If you've never had a really good set of cans, you'll hear things you didn't know were there in any music you listen to.

However, beware of some of the chicom stuff. A while back, I bought a $55 pair that was shipped directly from there. I took them out of box to try and my first impression was that I must have lost some of my high freq hearing. Not all that unbelievable as I am over 70. They certainly looked like real Sony's, but ??? Then, I switched back to my 8 year old Sony's and miraculously, it came back! I did this test a half dozen times with various sources and it was clear, the "new" ones rolled off the highs quicker than the originals. I don't think this would have been the case if they were purchased from a reputable dealer at "normal" street prices which I plan to do. I suspect the cheap ones were either knock-offs or some sort of factory seconds.

One other recommendation I would offer is to immediately buy a set of the velour cushions as the original's covering will start to flake off way too soon.
