Kenwood Quality Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I've owned this speaker for over six years; I bought it new, and used it with various transceivers. It's now in service with my TS790.

Likes:
1. Good filters.
2. Two radio A/B input switching.
3. Line out phono.
4. Attractive matching finish for TS790 &TS850.
5. Nice frequency response with low listening fatigue.

Dislikes:
1. Speaker wadding is needed for elimination of boxy effect, but most speakers IMO need this.
2. I had to fix thin rubber sheet disks on the feet to stop movement when pressing the buttons.

It's up there with the SP930/940/950 for quality, and its price is not too bad compared to the other companies products.

OWN THREE OF THEM ! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
That's right I have three of them. Two for my kenwood 790 and one for my 850sat. These are great speakers and match these kenwood rigs.

Good value if you get one pre-owned Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
After seeing a used SP-31 speaker advertised at at sensible price I decided
to splash out and buy it!
I though I'd make a note of my likes/dislikes in case anyone else needs
convincing either way.

Dislikes:
-Very light, it slides around on the table when I try to operate the
pushbuttons! This should be easily resolved by an anti-slip mat.
-No speaker cloth. I was surprised to be able to see straight through the
grille to the speaker cone so I will fit one at some point.

Likes:
-Audio filters are useful, but not needed with the 870's DSP facilities.
I've configured input B so I can use it with my AR-7030 receiver to
remove some of the hiss. They are probably of more use with other
matching kenwood rigs e.g. TS-850, TS-790.
-Ability to select two different receivers (see above).
-Looks good alongside the 870!
-Sounds good compared to the internal speaker (but I'm no hi-fi buff!).
-Rear panel line output socket (phono) comes in handy to connect to the
PC for PSK31 reception or audio recordings.

The guy I bought it from had been (mis)sold it as a matching speaker for
a TS-2000. Quite amusing as the TS-2000 seems tiny compared to the 870!
