A Keeper! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
A well-built antenna which not only met my expectations, but exceeded them electrically, mechanically and esthetically with the black powder coat version. Will be with me on ALL my portable operations henceforth . Many TNX for doing it right!

Outstanding!! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Got it a couple of months ago, and I'm very satisfied with it. I am using it with my Yaesu FT-817ND, and a small Buddipole mast.
I ordered it with the very solid high quality carrying bag.

Everything fit easily including my coaxial cable, and some fittings for my mast.

I love the PVC mounting system, because you can turn it for Horizontal or Vertical polarization.
I have add 2 foot section of one inch dia. PVC tubing (white) along with a female coupling to screw it on top of my Buddipole mast.

It is light and portable and can be taken anywhere for:

1- Fox hunting

2- Satellite

3- Iss = International space station

4- ARES

5- EMCOMM

6- Repeaters or simplex FM

7- SSB/CW dx'ing or contest

8- Canwarn in Canada or Skywarn in US

9- Direction Finding

10 Public services events.

Think about it, you have a lightweight dual band beam which cover 144/148 & 430/450 MHz with only one coax cable without the use of a duplexer.

I worked few stations and heard some very distant beacons with the help of some tropo propagation.-

Quick to set up, easy to operate, it is a winning piece of gear. It is an ideal companion of all your adventures and a real Keeper.-

Thumbs up to the ELK Antenna crew.

Really great for FM satellites Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
I've been using one of these since I first got on satellites in fall 2014. The SO-50 satellite is very easy to work with this antenna and 5 watts from a dual-band FM transceiver. In suburban areas I've been able to make QSO's if the satellite is above 10 degree elevation. Out in more open country it's even better. Basically your choices for a portable dual-band V/U satellite antenna are this one, or similar antennas from Arrow; I'm sure any would be good choices.
And it's only going to get better folks! Several new FM satellites are going up, starting with the Fox series later in 2015. So get this antenna, get on SO-50 now and enjoy the new ones when they go up!

Outstanding Performance Time Owned: more than 12 months.
One of the best antennas I have ever owned! I've had this antenna for over 3 years. It is used mostly for ARES and Public Service. This easily assembled, small, light antenna enables ARES Net Control to operate at 5 watts due to it's high gain. I carry this antenna with me at all times, in a PVC tube in my vehicle trunk.

I was 80 miles from my local repeater in challenging terrain and needed to participate in our ARES net. 75 watts out on a Hustler CG-144 7'6" collinear mobile antenna wouldn't make the contact. Pulled out the Elk Log Periodic and easily contacted the repeater 80 miles away.

If I could only have one 2m/70cm antenna then the Elk Log Periodic would be the one I would choose. It also makes a great HOA attic antenna when used with a rotor.

It's size, weight and gain make it a winner for terrestrial or satellite operations. Get one because it's worth every penny.

Highly recommended Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I use it primarily operating portable, quality is excellent, have a very good gain.
I love the PVC mounting to change to match needed polarity and the color-coded elements make ease of assembly and disassembly.

Highly recommended!!

Big performance! Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Put a good coax on this little antenna and go to work. The antenna is easy to assemble. If you use it on an outside pole, be sure it is not a metal pole at within 3 feet of the antenna. It is highly sensitive to metal mast. I use PVC to isolate it from the metal The gain is for real, and a lot of gain for a small antenna at almost 7 dbd. Works great on 2 meters and 440 with good swr. If you have an swr issue, check your coax and make sure it is away from metal masts.

Magical antenna Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I picked up the Elk 2M/440L5 because I wanted to get a good portable option with decent gain, easy assembly without issues like duplexers. I expected it to work well based on the reviews, but in reality it very far exceeded my expectations. To start with the build quality is excellent. Fit and finish is superb and everything just seems very high quality. I love the PVC mounting because my portable mast system from GoVertical lets me slip the PVC into the top of any section for easy, stable mounting. This is how I have my other antennas setup, but since this is out of the box like that, it just makes it easier. I first tested the Elk using the handle at ground level and was getting full quieting reports with my Yaesu VX-7R on both 2M and 440 with repeaters in Longwood, South Orlando and out at Walt Disney World. These range from about 22 to 32 miles. Because the HT is dual band simultaneously and the repeaters are at opposite ends of the area I was actually getting amazing responses off the back of the antenna on 440 while the front was points at a 2M repeater! This rather tiny antenna is far quieter than my large verticals. I got the antenna up about 20 feet in the air and hit much further repeaters almost to the coast. Really this antenna is nothing short of magical. I had to call Jim at Elk just to tell him! I'd highly recommend Elk as a product and company to anyone who needs a portable high gain dual bander.

Protected till needed Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
As ERC director, I was looking for directional U/V that could go up fast, go V or H, and go safe till needed. I final settled on a Elk 2/440 5E. I looked at the ELK bag, and thought, that not much protection. got a 3"-24" ABS tube at HD with two 3" caps. A couple a strokes of a course file rounds the edges of the PVC pipe to fit in the tube. Picked up a 1/2 Tee to 1/2 NPT and with the BuddiPole Adapter it will fit on any extendable painter's pole.
The antenna goes together so easy, fit the bill and works great. When I need to be heard, it get the job done.

Super Antenna Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
This is a followup to a recent post regarding the Elk 5 element Log Periodic antenna. This afternoon myself and another ham friend used this antenna along with an Yaesu FT60 HT to make 3 confirmed contacts with stations in Texas, Mexico and Tennessee during a recent pass of the AO27 satellite. Prior to this recent attempt, and more out of curiosity than necessity, I checked the SWR on the antenna and found it around 1.1 to 1.2

This little antenna is one super performer and I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a something to work satellites with or for just a simple 2m/70cm portable, directional antenna.

Earlier 5-star review posted by KJ6SBW on 2012-09-03

I have been reading reviews of this antenna over the past few days in an effort to decide if the Elk Antenna is what I needed to communicate with satellites.

Today myself and another ham friend, who happened to own this particular Elk antenna, met at a local park with the desire to try the antenna in an effort to communicate with satellite AO27 as it made a mid-day pass over the US.

To say the least I was very impressed. All we had for a rig was a Yaesu FT-60 HT and the Elk antenna. A couple of minutes after AOS (acquisition of signal) we heard the digital transmissions followed shortly afterwards by several S9 FM signals. We were both astounded at how well this antenna worked.

With only 5 watts I was able to make a brief contact with another ham across the country in spite of the pile-up of hams all trying to make a contact.

In my humble opinion this antenna is worth the price and will be my next purchase.

Great compact antenna Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have used this antenna now for several years, mainly when out roving around in my RV on trips, and use it along with the Yaesu FT60 ht for satellite work. Works very well and nice and compact for storage. One thing though, you have to add $50 to that price listed as hasnt been that price in 3-4 years...
