Great! Time Owned: N.A.
I appreciate the compact size of this antenna which I use portable for satellite communication. It doesn't get hung up on the door jams of my home or car when I venture off to makes contacts.

Ray responded quickly to a question I had about the antenna, so customer service is certainly something that Elk prides themselves on. Neat antenna!

Worked Hawaii from California nearly 4000 miles direct on tropo Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Worked Hawaii from California with ELK antenna on
144.170 MHz SSB direct during tropo ducting season. 4000 miles on a ELK Antenna direct !
Had only 30 watts ! Heard both the 144.170 and 432.078 CW beacons in Hawaii from California from
DM03 to BK29 7-31-2010.
Great antenna for portable use.
See the video via you tube to see Elk Antenna in action with contacts from California to Hawaii.

I purchased the 5 element Elk 140/440 to use as a portable unit for emcomm work. Checked into the Net with it up abt 13 ft. and got a good report using my HT running 5 watts. Did some field strength tests of my own comparing it to three other antennas. The Elk out performed anything else I had been using. I will take the instruction of the builders and give the antenna a more permanent installation. I am fortunate to live only a few town miles from where the antennas are built and have the advantage to talk to Ray personally with any questions. Ray is a brilliant source and has been willing to communicate via e-mail or any other means. He loves to talk about his work and many other ham subjects. You can’t possibly go wrong with this product. For the price, performance and portability of this antenna it is easily the most useful antenna I own.

Nice portable antenna Time Owned: more than 12 months.
This antenna comes with an aluminum main section already mounted to a PVC support, and ten aluminum elements that simply screw on to it. Assembly took all of 5 minutes for this experienced antenna builder. An SO-239 coax connector is installed at the front of the antenna.

I found this antenna to be a wonderful portable/emergency antenna. It is not intended to be used for a permanent antenna installation as it is not designed to tolerate the weather. When I use it, it is installed on a non-conductive (fiberglass) mop handle to prevent any mast interaction with the antenna.

This antenna really shows its capabilities on SSB since you would mount it horizontal for this mode, and mounting issues are less. And while I have not used it to work satellites, I cannot see why it would not make a good satellite antenna when used with a dual-band radio.

This antenna is a log-periodic, and because of it's design, must be carefully installed. If installed vertically, it MUST be installed on a non-conductive mast and the cable 'held' (routed) away from it at a right angle for at least a quarter wavelength distance to prevent a distortion of the SWR and pattern that would be caused be the cable being in close proximity to the elements.

If the antenna is mounted horizontal, the problem becomes less critical as the cable can be allowed to fall away from the antenna for at least a quarter-wavelength distance before being secured to the support. Again, a non-conductive support is best, even though it will not be interwoven with the elements in this mounting position.

The SWR was best on 2-meters, acceptable on 440. I used, and would strongly recommend installing several choke cores on the coax where it connects to the antenna to help keep the radiation pattern uniform.

Best antenna goof I have made Time Owned: more than 12 months.
A friend of mine went to (the Livermore Ca.) swap meet for me to get another type 2m/440 beam, and he found the Elk by accident and bought it. I figured what the heck and hooked it up, and used it in the wrong direction (I was really new to ham) and when another repeater responded in the wrong (actually correct) direction and a lot further away. I was shocked to say the least. I found the builder of the antenna and he had the radiation pattern with him. And learned more about this antenna. It's been nearly 15 years ago I got this mistake and still have it and love it.. It's my only 2m/440 antenna and I will/would buy another if this one ever gets destroyed.. And I'm sure there has been a few improvements since then.. 73 Scott

Little Big Giant! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I just bought this little guy solely based on the reviews. I did not expect the antenna to perform this well. Last night I made several contacts past 200 miles from my QTH in Miami Florida (EL95). This morning I worked W5UWB (EL17) from Corpus Cristi,Texas both on 2 meters and on 432mhz. Great 5-9 report on tropo opening. I did not expect this kind of performance from a log periodic with a 2 foot boom!. Great antenna if you want something with a small footprint that acts like a much bigger beam. I will recommend to all my friends.

Great antenna and service Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I bought my 2/440 LPA used at the Desert Rats hamfest in Palm Springs CA. It looked like neat little antenna for portable ops and a friend,Mike KA6PGN, was familiar with ELK saying it was a good deal. When I tested the antenna at work the lower usable freq was 440 with quick rise in VSWR below that. Email to ELK brought word from Ray that I had an older model but they would send me a matching sleeve to get the usable range below 435. All for free on a USED antenna!!!! Thanks Ray!! With the sleeve installed the antenna tests as promised. It will be the directional compliment to KU4AB squalo/loops on 2/440

Superb Performance Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I received my Elk 2M/440L5 antenna on Jan 20 and had it assembled within 30 minutes. That very same evening I stepped out just to listen as AO-51 passed over and ended up making a contact. Today I mounted my Elk on a camera tripod, set up for AO-27, and made five contacts within two minutes. Needless to say I am very pleased with this antennas performance when working the heavens.

Excellent Antenna for restricted space. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I am very happy with this purchase. I am in a restricted apartment with limited space. I chose the Elk first for its size as well as the fact that I would not need a duplexer to work both bands. I have recieved great audio reports and am very happy with this purchase.

A must for anyone looking for a Dual Band direction antenna.
