Must have Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I first bought the Elk 2 meter LP when I had an Icom 2100H, but I was able to trade in that antenna (since it was never used outside) towards the purchase of this dualband LP in July of 2004. I connected it to my Icom T7H and with 500mw I was making many repeaters full quieting in both bands.

Now it is used exclusively indoors with my Kenwood TM-V7A and with the amount of gain it has, even low power seems excessive for most repeaters. It certainly helps with simplex and high-level repeaters in greater Los Angeles County. Since I crossband with my Motorola portable, I can get out of the "fry zone".

The color-coding makes assembly a snap. For portable operation it seems like a mic stand and PVC mast are best. It's so light that I hang it on my wall with shoestring, aimed north, and it can still make repeaters south, east and west.

I really believe there is no better beam out there for these two bands and at this small size.

simple to use Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I use mine when I travel. I keep it, 50 feet of coax, 2 5' sections of PVC pipe, a collapsible microphone stand, a PVC coupling and a roll of electrical tape stowed under the rear seat of my pickup. I can have it up hooked into my FT7800 and running in about 5 minutes. I have hit repeaters 100 miles away while camping on Lake Ontario (upstate NY around Henderson Harbour) used it in a hotel with an HT at Fort Lee in Virginia and have even used it at home with my HT during power outages (does well enough so it eliminated the need for an amp in most cases) and is also great to use mountain topping 2/440 ssb with my FT857D. The workmanship is excellant and swr is very flat across both bands. In the day of covenants and deed restrictions this antenna is worth its weight in gold, 2 minute setup and teardown and works well even when using it from inside (didn't want to upset the MP's at Fort Lee}

The Best. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I recently ordered this antenna to work on my TS-2000 and put it together in 2 minutes. No kidding. When I went to put it on the mast, I had a question whether to mount vertically or horizontally because I had seen it displyed in ads both ways. I called Ray at Elk Antennas and he told me what I needed to do and what the difference would be by the 2 mounting options. He was extemely helpful. The directions for assembly and mounting on a mast are so easy to follow. I mounted the antenna on 15 feet of 1" PVC and worked great with my first contact. Ray has some suggestions about mounting such as putting adhesive on the PVC and sealing the PVC and antenna with poly. I did both of these just to insure years of service with no troubles. Hats off to Elk for their fine products at a reasonable cost.

Works Great Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
The antenna is easy to assemble, and is well-built.

Ray of Elk Antennas helped make the installation go smoothly with some good suggestions.

My QTH is in a valley, so I had expected reception on 2M and 440 to be limited. However, my first contact was very strong even though it was 35 miles away, off axis, and over a 400 ft hill.

Great For H.O.As Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Everything that I put up has to come down. At under 2 ponuds and for the gain....You can not go wrong.

Fantastic Antenna Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
I use this for a portable antenna that I can take with me any were I go. Small enough to fit in a suitcase. It can be put together in just a few minutes. Mounting to a mast is with pvc pipe. The pvc pipe allows you to change it to vertical or horizontal mounting. Stainless steel parts. Rugged construction. Excelent forward gain and excelent front to back ratio. I have used it for direction finding in mobile hunts. I worked a repeater over 100 miles away with the antenna at about 10 feet high and the repeater antenna was only about 1000 feet high. The antenna is as good as they get.

A winner Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I got this antenna to fill a slot in my system of VHF and UHF antennas for portable public service and ARES/RACES activities. I have a light mast system and a heavy mast system, and this antenna is my directional dual bander for the heavy system. It will mostly be used in a vertical orientation (although I hope to try some portable 2m SSB and CW in the not-to-distant future with this antenna).

The supplied PVC mast was connected to a two foot section of 1.25" PVC that can slip over a heavy steel Radio Shack mast section. With an "adapter" section of 1" PVC it can also slip over my light tripod's extendable section. This additional section keeps the antenna away from any metal mast sections when vertically polarized.

During testing with this setup, I found that I could ignore the supplied instructions on critical feedline orientation, and simply run the coax directly back to the mast from the feedpoint. Got a nice flat SWR on both bands first time out.

My on-the-air testing so far has been limited to a couple of QSO's and testing access to a few repeaters. I normally have trouble getting into one area repeater when portable with 5 watts in my back yard. Using this antenna I got in easily with only a tiny bit of "fry" on 1 watt and the antenna only 6 feet up on my back deck. I got into another closer repeater on only 50 mw.

I think this antenna is a real winner. I had no problem feeding it, and the SWR is very, very low. Since the elements unscrew, it should be easy to cart around for various events. I'm glad I got it.

Great Portable Antenna Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I recently purchased an Elk 2/440 5 element log periodic antenna for portable operating on VHF and UHF with my Yaesu FT-897D. It assembles easily and quickly and there's no tunning. There are two color coded sections for each element, 10 altogether and it takes all of about 2 minutes to fit together. The sections are durable and light weight (about 6 ounces for all 10). The longest section is less than 19 inches and the boom is only 24 inches and weighs just about 10 ounces. This is an ideal antenna for backpacking.

Using some standard PVC pipe fittings from my local hardware store, I can mount my Elk log periodic beam on top of my Buddipole telescoping mast. Switching between the two antennas is simple and adds to the fun of going portable... HF, VHF and UHF... never a dull moment.

The performance of the Elk beam is outstanding. Using just my Yaesu VX-7R handi-talkie, I am able to hit repeaters 50 to 60 miles away. Last weekend, with my FT-897D and a little elevation, I was able to make solid contacts over 150 miles away.

This is a light, exceptionally well made, high performance antenna that is ideal for portable or fixed station use. I couldn't be more pleased!

Fantastic Portable Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Just bought this 2M/70CM 5 element log periodic from Elk Antennas at HRO in Delaware. I was shocked with what it could do with only 1.5 watts about 8 feet off the ground. With 5 watts, I was hitting repeaters over 60 miles through hilly terrain. To the guys from Elk -- Great Job!

portable, easy to assemble and disassemble Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I used this in the 2004 Field Day at the top of a 40 foot slip up mast. It was connected to my Icom 706; I rotated the antenna mast by hand. I got it to do mountain topping at a moment's notice. The elements screw into machine screws fastened to the boom. It bundles tightly into a small bag. It served its purpose at field day; quick to install and remove. Was able to work many 2 meter stations both horizontal and vertically polarized although I was horizontal. I have the 222MHz version also. This is not for a permanent mount because of the 1 inch PVC, but truely portable. I recommend it for having a dual band, small, portable, throw it in the car and connect to your dual band transceiver type of antenna.
