Review Summary For : Shure 550L
Reviews: 4MSRP: List ~ $102.00
Description:
The Shure 550L is an omnidirectional dynamic base station
microphone with a frequency response specially tailored
for voice intelligibility. It is equally useful for radio communications,
paging and dispatching systems, and its
low-impedance connection makes it adaptable to most PA
amplifiers. The low-impedance design also makes it useful
for long runs of cable, or under severe hum disturbance conditions.
The microphone is not affected by heat or humidity. Its exclusive
ARMO-DUR case is immune to oil, grease, fumes,
salt spray, sun, rust, and corrosion—and is outstanding in its
ability to resist mechanical shocks and vibration. The “Million-
Cycle” leaf-type switch is designed to withstand rigorous
operating conditions and constant use.
Features
• Low-impedance operation
• Crisp, natural, high-intelligibility voice response
• Fingertip control bar actuates microphone circuit and
external relay or control circuit
• Long-life switch meets rigorous requirements of communications
and paging systems
• Sturdy, high-impact ARMO-DUR base and microphone
case resists corrosion
• Reliability under all operating conditions
• Neoprene feet prevent microphone slipping
Product is in production

Great Mic! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I bought this mic new & received delivery of it today. Frequency response is 150hz to 6k with a boost at around 3k with the result the audio is clear & well balanced. Low impedance so it suits modern radios Plenty of drive from this mic into my Yaesu FTdx1200. The problem with the current batch of manufacturers mics is they sit too low & it's necessary to bend your neck over like a Vulture to use them! The 550L stands tall & I find is the perfect height for me. I also own a Shure 444D which was my favourite mic until the 550L which produces slightly more bass whilst retaining excellent intelligibility. I believe Shure no longer produce this mic, grab one if you can, you wont be sorry.

Great mic Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I am writing a review on this microphone because it seems to be overlooked alot when it comes to Shure microphones. I found 2 of these at a pawn shop for 15 bucks, they were used for horse auctions at the fairgrounds. One of them went to a friend. I rewired it and have had nothing but great reports from every radio I have put it on. It is not a power mic, but other than that fact, it always sounds good. I am female and my friends say I sound "just like me" on it.

Works Fine Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Actually mine is an E. F. Johnson, Shure model XTBM694EFJ. This is really a Shure 550T. But, I've by-passed the internal amp so now it is a 550L. Whatever. I just got this on EBay for 10 bucks. I cleaned it up and it looks like new. I bypassed the amp since my FT-920 only has 5V at the mic socket and that wouldn't power the mic. But, it works very well without it. No problem with the audio and it has plenty of drive. Early reports indicate it sounds just fine. Looks very nice too. I chose not to cut the monitor blocking spring, so I just leave it depressed.

Good match for my voice and FT-1000MP Time Owned: more than 12 months.
After reviewing the response curves of this microphone and looking for an easy way to offset my base voice, I bought a new unit in the box on Ebay for $20.50. In my situation, the best assessments with my voice and the MP are with no EQ (4-4 OFF)and EDSP (7-7 SSb-t) at 150-3100. N5GND has had similar results using one with an FT-920. Reports from those who know our natural voices are that this mic consistently reproduces them accurately. The unit has a nice rise from 0 dB at 1000 Hz to about 12 dB at 3500 Hz that provides high intelligibility.
