Land Cruiser of HF Radios Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Bought new 30 years ago. Performance is very good. RX is pleasant to listen to. IF shift works well. Knobs have good feel. Simple controls, a lot fewer than contemporary rigs, but seems to always work well.

Motorized tuner will match very wide range, is better than most relay switched tuners. Has a brief "hidden" menu for audio passband offset and a few other things. Didn't know it was there for couple years until RTFM.

Have used it mobile, portable, fixed powered by AC line and batt. Matching FP-800 supply/speaker is very nice.

Simple, good performance, enjoyable to use.

Great rig, EXCELLENT receiver Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
Picked this up cuz the price was too good to pass up. Had it on the bench learning to use it and heard a clear SSB signal from Indonesia. That area is difficult from my station in MN so I immediately switched the antenna to my IC-7300 thinking I would read the signal better and possibly log a contact. Big surprise, the 890 had a clearer signal no matter what I did with the filters on the 7300. Great rig.

Great transceiver Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I owned the first in 1990. I bought the second in 2010. I bought the third in 2021.
Nice simple rig that works very well!
I highly recommend it if you like plain radios without all the bells and whistles.
It is very easy to use and use, great for field day or for a beginner ham.
The best double-conversion superheterodyne I've ever owned.
I replaced his MH1-B8 microphone with a new Astatic 636L
Clearer and more crystalline modulation.
I was very lucky to find such a beautiful and functioning device.
I highly recommend it to all vintage lovers.

Like This One Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Bought this rig off QRZ as a "tech special". Had been butchered pretty much. Or I thought! After reconnecting all the cables "the right way" the little rig came to life.
This is one nice radio. Rx is quite and the NB works good. Solid 100 watts on all bands but 10 where I get 90+. This will be a keeper.

A Good One! Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
Very pleasant to operate with no menus to decipher and attempt to manipulate. The receiver is very good and notch and IF shift actually work and work well. The internal tuner handles both my dipole and vertical well. Transmit audio is strong and the little rig puts out around 120+ watts all bands. A little known extra is the ability to change tx and rx tones to suit using the "fast and mode" controls simultaneously. This is one of the best radios from the 90's and is still a great performer today.

Great Sized/Featured Radio Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Won't go into all the details but the 890 is a great size, not a TS-130 but built like it, a little brick of a radio. Very solid, easy to figure out with or without the manual, no goofy menus to scroll thru. Does all modes, very quiet and sensitive receiver and not much more you need to ask for. If you see one, grab one.

Great little radio Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have compared the 757, etc and just love the way this radio sounds, works and... looks. Excellent reports always with this little radio. Looks great on the desk.

Good enough is enough Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
I have owned many HF rigs, my first being a Yeasu Ft-840 and thought that was the RIG!!! It was for me in my infancy to HF. The radio was exceptional and getting back into the hobby with limited funds, the FT-890 has some super perks. Filtering etc.... I'll move up to the FT-1200 or the like in a few months, but this radio "Works". Can't beat one for the prices going for it at present. Great RX

Volume control Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
The volume is always max in order for me to hear 90% of the time. Is there a way I can improve the volume control? I have my FT890 AT hooked up to a 780 power supply with a external speaker but the volume once again is set on max if very weak receiving. Can you make a recommendation which would help?
