Love this old great radio! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have had this radio for about 4 years. Got it for a song but the only reason I did was because the guy needed money. It has the optional aftermarket tone board in it so runs repeaters fine although you need to open the radio to change the tone since it is dip switch operated. No biggie though as I use it at home as a 2m base for two different repeaters that are both on 100hz tone. It sounds as everyone has stated which is excellent on both receive and transmit. I have five other modern 2m mobiles and get the best reports on this rig than any of them!

Bought one at a local hamradio fleamarket last month and payed only 15 euro's for it. Came with a black fat 'Sommerkamp' mike and the original powercord. Replaced some burned out bulbs ( the only problem found ) and discovered the manual at the Yahoo usersgroup for the Yaesu 227.

Sounds great both on receive and transmit as in most reviews stated ! NO intermod or what so ever found. Runs 24/7 at a nearby local repeater without a problem (no CTCSS needed here as the 227R has none, so I was lucky ! )

Very basic transceiver but...a nice old lady to work with!

Outstanding simple 2m rig Time Owned: more than 12 months.
It lacks a lot of modern "necessities", but it is a very good transceiver. ZERO intermod, sounds phenomenal, and you can work on it without having a PhD in electronic engineering.
Very good for packet, can be easily modded to run 9600 baud, and it's crystal clear. Note, the crystal clarity does not mean that you have to manually turn a knob to select crystals for your freq, just one big knob like newer rigs.
Pick one up cheap and enjoy clear audio on 2m!

Face it... This thing lacks features. No CTCSS, only one memory, a non-intuitive method for programming that memory channel to boot! Only 10 watts of output power, the high/low power switch is located on the BACK of the radio, for crying out loud! No scanning! No Paging codes, no nothing, but a good, reliable tranceiver.

I'd buy a second one without hesitation! I even wired a DTMF mike to mine so I could operate phone patch on our local repeaters. While there may not be many uses for a feature-barren radio such as this, it is simple to operate, reliable and it sounds SO darned good!

Definitely a good packet radio, a decent unit for the garage (I hope I'm not the ONLY one who listens in while turning wrenches), or for the second car...
