Best general coverage reciever Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have owned my R-5000 for almost 10 years and it still performs solidly to this day. The audio was great right out of the box but the YK 88SN filter made it even better, especially on SSB. I cannot say enough good about this radio. I find myself wishing Kenwood had made a matching Transmitter. I was very sorry to hear that Kenwood had stopped making this fine radio, but ever so glad I had one before they did.

great receiver Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I sold mine about 4 years ago and wish i hadnt. These really are top class radios. Very good audio despite lack of synch det. very sensitive and good selectivity.
A few points to note.

1- the std 6khz am filter was rubbish, the optional yk88a 6khz was a MUST. with that in the am is sweet as a nut!

2- provision for 2 optional bandwidths, see if u can score one with options in.

3- 12v was an option

4- pc interface chip was an option, although this was really a generic chip available quite cheaply from any elctronics shop.

5- apparently some oldeer ones suffer from key bounce whic is almost impossible to fix

6- more worryingly i have heard reports the early rigs had a glue that over time eats away at the PCB. the later ones used different glue.

IF you can find a good well looked after r5000 at a good price grab it!
