Buy one. Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have been using my PR40 together with a W2IHY EQplus to drive my IC-7000 for a while now.

I have a string of unsolicited comments on how good the audio sounds, including one conversation where every over the person just couldn't stop talking about how good it sounded.

Contrary to what some people claim good audio is not necessarily ESSB. Also contrary to some claims, I find that good audio helps enormously under marginal conditions. For digging a signal out of the noise, there is no doubt that some compression combined with high frequency pre-emphasis does help, but before you get to that stage, where the signal is simply weak, good audio tends to beat the compressed, very restricted range audio for ineligibility any day, and so gets responses.

A quality microphone! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have had the PR-40 for about 15 months now. It is connected to the W2IHY duo, i.e. the "8 Band Audio Equalizer and Noise Gate" and the "EQplus" and from there the audio goes to an Icom IC-756PROIII transceiver. I have to say that I am most pleased with this quality microphone. Reports are excellent and it matches very well with the W2IHY audio components. I also have original Heil accessories (boom, etc.) so it both looks well and works well. I can recommend the PR-40 to all hams.

Always Great Time Owned: more than 12 months.
You can almost everything cheaper if you want to spend your time looking for bargains. Personally I just go for what is proven to work with amateur radios. In this case, Heil Microphones. I have used them with about 12 rigs and they always made a big improvement in my audio.

Just yesterday one person told me that I always sound good no matter which radio I am on. The other said that he wished he could record the way I sound because I sounded fantastic running a PR-40 through W2IHY gear. I am sure that I could have saved money buying other brands and spending time making cables and getting them to work without any RF problems but life is short and my time is valuable so I'd rather spend a little more to get something that is known to work and work well at that.

Plug n Play Microphone Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Replaced a Behringer B-1 condenser and a full rack. Flat, full range dynamic with -40 dB of rejection off axis, with computer fan, amp fan and AC running, I have absolutely no noise at all.

Very little tweaking on the W2IHY box and flat setting on the Orion II gives excellent audio. Just one turn of the EQ to -14 and it's a pileup buster better than the HM-10 I've used.

Heil has a Humbucking setup to reject RFI and noise from computers and fluorescent lights.

This mic is the one mike I use on all the radios here through a Muti-Switch without changes to input audio, just pick which radio and speak.

Nice $169 mic Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Well, after trying several mics, I didn't care for the whispy upper end, along with some breathiness which I didn't hear in the AT, EV or Sennheiser.

For the original price of ~$169 (Hamstop) this was a nice offering, but for the current $325+ I'll have to defer to others on the market which have been around a long time and to me don't sound as 'dark' but seem to have better overall presence without sounding hissy.

- Actually I prefer my inexpensive $200 Ribbon, especially when driving the mic up close & personal, as the ribbon has no tendency for sounding over driven.

If you're determined to get a PR40 it should be to your benefit to have some type of equalization on hand, such as a W2IHY EQ or Behringer rack gear, as I have heard these sound rather muted, (heavy bass with little top end) when plugged directly into a rig, except for some older Kenwoods running Compression, - nice combo.

Thanks to KB6WAS for the use of his.

PR-40 on Kenwood TS-2000 Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
great microphone !!!!
very wide and natural sound without any external processor!!
my advise is using PR40 straight into the TS2000 with TX DSP HI BOOST, mic gain 80, 3KHZ bw.
DX modulation adding the voice processor only, nothing else.
I've used w2ihy machines, i can say that they change the type of the signal and the modulation becomes too many unreal, many people don't like this way, while everyone will appreciate the natural sound of the only microphone to the RTX...
so.. sell all the external toys!! TRUST ME

The best mic on the market Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I purchased this mic new from HRO four years ago and since then I have replaced radios in my shack,I have owned,TS-2000,TS-870,MK5 Field,Orion, and now the 756Pro3 and I have to say this wonderful mic did work great in any radio I had, after a couple of years using it directly to the radios, decided to purchase also the two boxes from W2IHY (8 bands EQ and the EQ Plus) and now I do have a broadcast sound with my Pro3,this mic not only look nice but it works professionally well,in my opinion is the best mic Mr Heil has built so far.I payed less than 300 bucks with the base and it has served me for four years without any problem,I will recomend anyone to buy it,don't even hesitate,go for it !!

The Best mic. to date! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I have owned quite a number of Bob's mic's, and some I was pleased with, and only 2 I hated.

This microphone is with out a doubt the best mic ever. I have also owned some other brand mic's in which all were highly respectable. I buy nothing, but the best when it comes to gear.

This mic. is truely the best out there. Hooked up to my IC-756 pro III, and pro II has been a superior joy. I have also tried it on my IC-7000, and my 7000 doesn't even sound like a IC-7000 anymore. It couldn't sound better!

I am truly happy with it in every way, and will not be getting rid of this mic ever.
