R8 Also Great Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I've never used an R8B, but I've had its grandpa, the R8, for about six years. The R8 is a great value and a great performer. My only gripe is the "carousel" arrangement of filters; not user friendly at all. I believe that the carousel was eliminated starting with the R8A. Even so, if you find an R8, and the price is right, don't pass it up.

Top Notch Receiver Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have owned this receiver for over a year, and this thing works great. I have done side by side comparisons with a dozen hf rigs, and this fine receiver holds it own! I would also rate the noise blanker the best overall, when compared to all the hf rigs tested. Also I love the fact this comes loaded, with no extra filters to buy! This receiver will rival most hf rigs receivers! Way to go Drake!!!

Won't get 5 stars until they add real buttons and Time Owned: unknown months.
-Optional VHF module works fine. I just hang 19" of wire right off the chassis mount with a banana plug.
-Excellent noise reduction with synchronous sideband and IF shift. Synchronous sideband works with AM as well as SSB. IF shift works with AM as well as SSB--which is great for adding some treble to muddy audio.
-generous number of memories
-analog signal strength meter--easier to read than LCD meters
On the down side:
-you can push the buttons four or five times and still not get a response
-the el cheapo tuning knob has no feel whatsoever
-it's better at scanning memories than it is at scanning up or down a band
