Classic tuner for my classic rigs Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
This is my 2nd MFJ Versa tuner...the first one being a 941E that I had bought new in 1995 and used until 2013. At that time I had sold the 941E and "upgraded" to an LDG AT-100. After 8 years of dealing with the foolishness of the LDG tuning when it felt like it, I bought a 944 off of eBay summer. The 944 was made like most of MFJ's classic lineup was...woodgrain boxes and eggshell/yellow paint. The build quality, in comparison to the 941 is quite a lot better, as I have noticed that the older MFJ gear was simply built better.

So far, the old 944 has tuned ALMOST everything that I have asked it to...with the exception of 160m with the Alpha Antennas FMJ balun-fed 29' vertical at my QTH. EVERY other band has tuned with no hassle. And like the 941, this tuner can handle coax-fed, balanced line, and random wires.

The ONLY thing this beast of a tuner doesn't have is a meter...but I had a Radio Shack power/SWR meter that works well for the set up that I have.

Overall, I am quite happy to have this old piece of MFJ nostalgia tuning my vertical.

Not the best for ladder-line dipoles... Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I've used this antenna tuner for 30 years or more, always to tune random wire antennas. And, it will tune pretty much anything I've asked it to. The problem, now that I've re-established my station after 30 years of inactivity, is that now I want it to tune a 110-foot doublet (dipole) with 600-ohm ladder line. It will tune the doublet 6 meters to 160 meters, no problem, but antenna performance is not good on 80 and 160. This is a well-known problem for balanced-line tuners with a balun "at the end." If you're going to use open ladder line, get a true "balanced" tuner, with the balun "at the beginning."

Workhorse Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Have had mine for over 20 years. Tunes anything though I never put more than 100 watts into it.

Very Good Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
It will tune in anything. I have a G5RV and a 60' Delta Loop on it. I have also used random wire of various lengths.
