Great While it Was Working Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I got lots of use mobile from this little handheld. It felt quite solid and rated highly on the ergonomics scale. In common with my other Yaesu experience at the time, it curled up its toes just outside of the warranty period and the dealer actually smiled at me while advising that there was only one year guarantee on handhelds because "otherwise it wasn't worthwhile selling them". I cannot remember the fault (but I sure remember paying for the repair) and it went straight into the classified adverts at the back of RadCom. I wouldn't buy it again, even though that is obvious given the choices available nowadays. At the time I loved it. Some years later when Marantz were clearing them out, I bought a Standard C510e (for around 40% of the cost of the FT709) which is still going strong today. Go figure.

I liked mine Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Very functional no-frills handie talkie from the late eighties. 5W out on hi power with 12V battery (a real knee-slapper when hung on the belt!) or 12V extrenal power. Ten memories. 440-449.995 MHz coverage. Not a wide-band scanner-style RX like modern handies, so this one is less prone to intermod from pagers and such.

Only real issue is that the side panel which contains the battery latch is flimsy. I once had about ten as spares.

I also had the FT-209 and FT-109 (2M and 1.25M, respectively.) Same comments apply to them. Looked pretty geeky to have them all hanging off my belt. That was when I was younger, before my waistline expanded. Would pull my pants down now!
