Thanks MFJ Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I owned the MFJ898C and it provided many years of solid reliable use. Had no real complaints except small issues like I had to shim the feet to keep it stable but it worked fine. I recently upgraded to the new 989D and here to report its an definite improvement especially with the tuning mechanism improvement with the inductor. Its smoother and easier to turn without the need to grab the tuner to keep it in place while tuning. The 989C model would hit (hard spots) at places on the inductor. The 989D eliminates all that business with a nice firm and smooth feel. The capacitors look huge compared the C model. For the price and the power rating MFJ is tough to beat. I purchased one instead of the ones boasting ratings into the stratosphere and construction that will outlast the pyramids with a price tag to reflect those attributes. MFJ works fine for my (amateur) hobby without taking out a second mortgage. Thanks MFJ. I have been using their products steady since 1982 and laugh at the acronyms associated with their name knowing its coming from minority of malcontents who will moan about hitting the lottery and the taxes they must pay.

Improvement Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I would have to disagree with those who say the "D" is not an improvement over the "C". For the money it does a more than decent job. I only use a tuner on the low bands. My antennas are cut for the "DX Window" but when I need to go way up in the band the "D" let's me do it with relative ease. I have only had mine a few days but on 160, & 80/75 it works well with both my verticals and my inverted "V's". The Inductance "spinner" is a big improvement and with a small adjustment it is reasonably smooth. This tuner stays put on the operating table and doesn't require two hands to keep it from moving around as the old one did.

Same junk, bigger box. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
MFJ saw fit to put the same junk in a bigger box. the "C" model had a serious design flaw; the case was too small for effective 160 meter tuning solutions!

That "flaw" has been addressed in the "D" model.

I'd be more impressed if whomever bought the "C" model in good faith, and found it technically and physically defective, would at least get to trade it in for the "golly-gee-whiz" improved model.

I've got a better suggestion; read reviews of MFJ products.

Not Much Here Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Bought one of the first ones that MFJ made. Bought at Memphis Hamfest 1st of March from MFJ. No dealers had them. Looks nice but don`t let looks deceive you.
Placed in line and immediately noticed the turns counter was wobbly. Pulled it out of line and removed the cover and noticed that the screws holding it together were ALL loose. Checked everything and had no less than 6 nuts and bolts that needed attention. Got it all to going and it just wouldn`t keep up with the Ten-Tec 238 I`ve been using.
I discussed the issues with Martin and he said they would check into it. It would not tune as well as my old 989. They have reduced the inductance on the roller inductor from the 989 to the 989d.
MFJ and Martin are nice people and I know he will get a handle on the tuner.
