Review Summary For : The Original 3898 Pecker
Reviews: 55MSRP: 65.00
Description:
The Pecker is designed to tune any tube final transmitters and amplifiers for SSB use fast and safe. It uses a single pulsed tone at a 30% on 70% off dutycycle. The short dutycycle helps keep dangerous heat buildup off your expensive tubes. It is NOT similar to MFJ's amp tuner the 214 and others that plug into the cw jack and use a pulsed carrier.
Product is not in production

No More Crackling Tubes Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have used one of Larry's peckers for years and it really makes tuning up a snap. It is quik and easy and the tubes don't even get warm. You HAVE to have a peak meter for it to work but who doesn't have one these days. It tunes just like talking and no tube damaging carriers. Save your tubes, buy a pecker.

Never without my pecker Time Owned: more than 12 months.
You ever hear those carriers on the band caused by some lids trying to tune their amp in cw mode? They tune and tune tying to dip thier plate I guess. That is the reason they put notch filters in rigs, to notch these fools out. If they had a 3898 pecker they could use SSB mode and tune up in 10 seconds.

I've had a 3898 pecker for 15 years I would never want to be without my pecker. It's the only way to tune a amp, in the mode your going to use.

I love my 3898 pecker..

Pecker recived Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Recently received my Pecker and it looks like a great product. Well packed and documented. Can't wait to use it with a SSB rig. Right now, I am "rigless" but soon that will change but i am now prepared for tuning it.
Rating is 4 right now as i have not tried it on air but from what I can see, a "5" would have been the rating. Perhaps I should have waited to do the review, but it looks so nice i could not

A Great Little Ham Tool Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
When I ordered the 3898 Pecker, I knew I would get a “good” product. After I took it out of the box it came in I looked it over good, and then I used it. Now I know for sure I have bought “a great product”.
I opened up the tuner to install the 9 volt battery as instructed. But while I had it open I also wanted to look and see just how well the wires and connections were soldered. But, when I open the case I could see none of the solder connections, everything was neatly covered, even the electronic circuit board was in a protective cover! I also checked to see if the mic cable was loose where a connection might possibly get pulled loose as well. But it too was perfectly snug in the box. It is a pleasant surprise to see the high quality workmanship that went into this little box.
After installing the battery, reading the instructions, and following the good advice I got from Larry by email, I tried tuning my amp with the Pecker. It works like a charm. I was able to get a better tune up out of my amp with a much lower grid current then ever before. I would say that over all, between a 1 and a 10, I would give this amp tuner, and the workmanship a 10 plus score.
