So far, so good Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Just purchased one of these nice radios last weekend. I have been using commercial radios for a long time, and have grown accustomed to the feel and durability of them. I was in the market for a durable 2 meter handheld, and was figuring I was going to need to find a Motorola or Kenwood commercial radio to get the durability I needed. I decided to take a look at the VX-170 based on the advertising that said it was waterproof and durable. Sure enough, it had the feel I was looking for. I also have large hands, and I have really grown to detest the overminiturized electronics that seem so wide spread. By all means, this is not a big radio, but it does have the feel I was looking for, and the buttons and controls are easy to use.
I have not had the chance to put its waterproof rating to the test, but expect to shortly.
The user interface is fairly straight forward, and I only need to reference the user manual a few times before I felt I had the radio mastered. Programming it is easy, but I'd still like to see Yaesu release programming software for this radio (none is avaialbe as of yet). Also, I'd really like to see some sort of belt clip or case that is a little more durable than the "swivle button" used. I am sure someone will come up with a suitable case to match the radios durability.

Oveall, it is a nice radio, and the low price will probably make this a popular seller.

A great 2m ht! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I have only had this ht a short time but I fell in love with it! Very well constructed water proof and as easy to use as any ht that you will ever buy. The battery life is great good readable display and many functions are included. I think that Yeasu has a winner with this HT and I would recommend the vx-170 to anyone who wants a good HT. So if you are considering this HT go ahead and get this one you will not be sorry.

Great Pro-level HT Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Easy to program w/o the manual, most settings are very intuitive (no need to carry the manual on vacations with this one). Commercial-quality, sturdy, large easy-to-read display. Great 2 meter only HT for $140! Highly recommended!

Better than the VX-150? Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Didn't think there was much room for improvement over the VX-150 - but here's the new VX-170!

Just released this week, and (of course) I grabbed one. Over 1,000 memories. Larger, very legible display - with more information. Better RX audio (700mW amp). Ships with a 1400mAH FNB-83 NiMH pack.

Extremely easy to program (if you plug in all your freqs first, then go back and alpha-tag them, life is good). CTCSS/DCS encode-decode standard, with split tone capability.

Due to its waterproofness, it uses the threaded, flanged audio accessories (like the VX-6 and VX-7).

At only about $20 above the price of the VX-150, this is going to be another winner from Yaesu.
