Review Summary For : Sirio 827
Reviews: 12MSRP: aprox £75 GBP
Description:
Very high quality 5/8 wave antenna with groundplanes.
Made from aluminium with Magnesium for better radio conductivity and maximum strength. This is certainly the strongest aluminium antenna available.
The large open coil prevents any build up of water or condensation and allows the antenna to handle high levels of RF power.
The top section is adjustable for swr, although in our experience there is no adjustment necessary.
Frequency 26-29MHz
Max Power 1000W
Length 6.7m
Radials 8 x 1.4m
Gain 7.5dB
Bandwidth 2000kHz
Product is in production

physically noisy on 10m without a slight mod Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I put up a Sirio 827 a few weeks ago and am have trouble with a regular buzzing / vibration noise from the antenna when there is any form of wind. I have tried a number of you ways to fix it, and hopefully I have found the cause of the problem today. First of all I bought the nylon ring to stabilise the radials because they vibrate quite wildly in the wind. The nylon ring helped but did not cure the problem. I also used aluminium grease between the aluminium radials and brass reinforcing rods just in case the noise was coming from the two metals vibrating together, but I suspect this wasn't necessary.

Now to the real cause of the problem. Because I am using this on 10m, almost all of the top tuning element is inside the top tube and it is this element that is hitting the top tube and causing the buzzing / vibration noise. To fix I replaced the tuning element with a 4 inch piece of aluminium rod and that cured it.

I am hoping to use the antenna as a multiband antenna. A number of reviews have suggested the VSWRs on most bands were low enough for most radios to tune the antenna. This is not the case, the antenna tunes in beautifully 1:1 at the configured frequency but the VSWRs aren't low enough for most radios, although dedicated tuners will be able to cope. Here are the VSWRs taken with an MFJ antenna analyzer when the antenna is tuned for 28.4mhz
29.7 - 2.9:1
29.0 - 1.7:1
28.3-28.150 1:1
27.5 - 1.7:1
27.0 - 2.3:1
24.990 - 5.2:1
21.450 - 9.5:1
21.000 9.2:1

14.350 - 6.4:1
14.000 - 6.2:1

I haven’t yet tried it with an external tuner or tested performance against my dipoles.

Excellent choice for 6 different HF Bands Time Owned: more than 12 months.
The last 8 years I have tested many different HF Multiband Vertical Antennas and there is not any comparison with the SIRIO 827.
The last 10 years I am using my SIRIO 827 only in the following HAM Radio bands: 40m (7Mhz) , 17m (18Mhz) , 12m (24Mhz) , 10m (28Mhz) and on 6m (50Mhz) by using the ATU Antenna Tuner of my YAESU FTDX-101MP.
It's working great on these HAM Radio bands and of course on the CB Band (27Mhz)
I have talked to many different countries-prefixes all over the World with this Antenna. You may watch the World Map on my QRZ.com website if you like.
SIRIO 827 it's the best choice due to it's size and due to it's heavy construction!
I recommend it 100% for all these reasons.

It's Not a, "Multi-Band" Antenna Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I give this antenna 5-stars as it performs very well as a 10-meter ground plane vertical vs. the price. Construction is very good, not great. The bottom half of the antenna is much better than the top. The upper whip sections use a low grade of aluminum allow and the sections do not fit together as well as a serious antenna would. Also, the self-tapping screws are not adequate. Some have said they used a hose clamp, I decided to just put in a few more larger self-tapping screws all all the joints. I also injected silicone into the gaps created by the mismatched tubing to lessen vibration fatigue on the joints. Use a good aluminum grease on all the joints and the radial mounts. With the antenna set to the 18mm stub setting which corresponds to 28.4 MHz on their tuning chart, the antenna is below 1.5:1 from 26.0 to 29 MHz. This antenna is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a multi-band antenna. Just because you can make this piece of metal radiate with a tuner does not make it multiband. This is a 10/11 meter vertical ground plane, and it does not have 7.5db gain as stated in description at the top of this review. I believe the 5/8 wave gives this about 1.5 db gain over a dipole. The antenna works well, and I'm happy with my purchase.

thoughts Time Owned: more than 12 months.
it's the only alloy antenna that I'd consider down here in breezy Cornwall (imax 2000 snapped)and I have to say it delivers. very well machined, strong and fits together well especially if you take your time assembling. I'm unlucky in that I can only get the base 10ft above ground, but still work the world on 11m, propagation allowing. I'd imagine it'd be every bit as effective on 10 or 12m. may get myself some 9ft tank whips to extend the radials to a 1/4 wave but other than that its spot on.

Excellent multiband antenna Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Hi all,
I erected this antenna a few weeks ago. Amazing for the price. This "CB" antenna works of course perfect on 10/11/12m, but also perfect without tuning on 17 and 20m. I need to tune on 40m (SWR 1:3.0 without tuning). Performances on 40 are not similar as my wire antenna. More noise and lose 2 à 3 points on the S-meter. 73 from Belgium

Excellent! Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
I've been reviewing Sirio's antennas for some time now and just when I think I've reviewed the best of their line, I get another one that impresses me even more then the last one! This 827 is absolutely one of the finest "affordable" vertical ground-planes on the market in my opinion. Very, very well engineered, well designed, heavy duty and superior performance...

12 Years of top performance! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
The Italian made Sirio 827 is a very popular 5/8th wave 10/11m vertical in Europe, and I believe now in the States and around the world also. I have mine since 1998 and it has been a stellar performer. Moved to 3 different QTH's and own all manner of wire and yagi antennas, but the 827 has come along with me every time and I'm convinced it still be performing well in another 12 years time. The only problem as mentioned in previous reviews is the self tapping screws which do loosen with time. Best solution is to use good jubilee(hose) clips instead, mine have been on for 5 years and no problems at all. Antenna is installed at 10m on a small tower and gets a good whipping with our Irish winter gales. The optional plastic re-enforcing ring to strenghten the 8 groundplanes is a very useful little device, especially when crows and blackbirds decide to land on them!
This antenna has given me DX to every corner of the globe, and is also a great local antenna. Will tune up 40-10 with any half decent tuner and works great 17-10. Other bands are a compromise as expected, but better than you would think, every bit as good as a G5RV on 40m!
So there you have it, all in all well worth every penny of the €90 I spent on it 12 years ago and highly recommended to anyone considering a 5/8 wave vertical for 10/11m with added surprises!!

Multi Band Vertical Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I've used the 827 and variants for years! They all perform very well, the 827 being the top of the class! This antenna needs reinforcing in various places, in particular the joints which use self tapper screws. Left as is, with wind vibration they work loose, the hole enlarges and they drop out, the tube slides down, suddenly you're looking at very high vswr! What I did here was to machine a slot where the holes were and use two stainless clamps to hold the tubes together. This worked perfectly and the tubes never moved regardless of weather conditions. A friend of mine had the novel idea of inserting a round length of wood into the joint, then screwing the self tappers into this, he reported that this method proved very reliable. I have the antenna tuned for ten metres where it gives excellent local dx and dx performance. On other bands via an SGC auto antenna matching unit it is usable from 160-6m, the performance being similar to a Shakespere ABS kitted out with groundplanes. This is a good design, but the cheap alumimium used is not as strong as aircraft quality and needs help to withstand strong winds. I've seen many of them succumb to wind where the likes of the Avanti Sigma two was able to survive, so, fibreglass rods inserted into the upper tubes in particular help toughen them up. This is a great performing antenna, I warmly recommend it.

Superb Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have owned my Sirio 827 for 2 years without any complaints what so ever. The build quality is superb (much better than my Hustler 6BTV)and most times out performs the Hustler. I can tune it down to 40 meters and have had exellent results with it. Highly recommended and value for money. Grab a bargain...
