UHF Commercial Icom excellent choice for 440 and GMRS Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
The F4GT (full keypad) and F4GS (4 button version) are what the IC-V8 2 meter ham radio is based off of. If you like your V8 you'll love the F4GT/S. There are a couple of differences between them however. The F4 has a threaded antenna connector as opposed to the BNC on the ham radios but then the threaded connector is more rugged. The display on the F4 supports up to 7 character alpha tags. Of course like all FCC part 90 radios, the F4 has no VFO or field programming, you must use the software and cable. But that is where the differences end. Just like the V8, the F4 has super RX and TX audio, a very good front end, and is easy to use. The programming software lets you choose from a plethora of functions for the P1 thru P4 keys. The radio supports dual priority scan with revert, CTCSS and DCS, as well as Quick Call (2 tone sequential) encode and decode standard. Using the software you can partition your channels into banks or altogether and the full keypad versions let you go to a channel directly just by pushing the numbers on the pad. Another cool feature is the radio supports operator selectable tone. The software lets you define a group of CTCSS or DCS tone combinations that can be selected from the keypad. DTMF autodialing with name storage is also included.
The F4 comes with a 1050mah battery from the factory which will run for considerably longer time than the 700maH pack included with the V8. The batteries and accessories (minus antenna) are compatible with the IC-V8, and the same programming cable (OPC478) is used.

This is a great radio and if you own a V8 and wanted a 440 version this is it. Of course it's FCC certified for part 90 use so if you wanted a UHF talkie that you can use at work (legally) and for play this is a good choice. I paid under 200 for mine NIB off the net and they can be had from most Icom dealers for around 350. Definately a superb choice and another example of fine craftsmanship from Icom.
