| TOP NOTCH ALL THE WAY! |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
| My experience with Mike was top notch from the begining to the end. I had a problem with power fluctuation on UHF on my 30 month old Kenwood TS-2000. Mike made a prognosis over the phone on my initial e-mail contact with him. It was only 2 days after Mike received my radio that he contacted me and said my radio was fixed. It was as he said, bad soldering at the PIN Diodes. There were a couple of other problems that I was not aware of that Mike also took care of. The cost of this repair was MUCH lower than I anticipated. The radio was returned in the same cosmetic condition that it was sent in. The radio now works as new. Mike is very knowledgeable and honest and I would not hesitate to send a radio to him again if the need arose. |

I can only add to the praise others have listed here. Mike handled a rather nasty burn-out issue for me on an ICOM 718 which required (among other things) repairing pc board traces, which he did in a well-thought out manner, and executed splendidly. The communication was great throughout the process with photos sent of the damage, as well as return of the damaged/replaced parts that were no bigger than a bread crumb in size.
As for his pricing, I can only say he is reasonable beyond my expectations - he will be the person I return to as the need arises for myself, and will heartily recommend him to others.
Thanks, Mike! And thanks to all the others who recommended him to me - I am indebted to you. |

| Mike is a very Professional Technician |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
Before delivering my third-hand (maybe fourth hand), Kenwood transceiver to Mike, I sent him an email asking if it might be worth while to invest in upgrades, a thorough inspection and analysis of the radio. The transceiver was somewhat operational but generally unreliable, and occasionally intermittent, both in transmit and receive…frustrating to say the least..!
After exchanging emails several times, I was convinced that I wanted Mike to perform all necessary work on the radio. His answers to my questions were friendly, professional, and technically correct.
I drove 100 miles to Mike’s location and delivered the radio. Mike noted the serial number and handed me a ‘claim-check’ listing the specifics of the radio. We had previously agreed that I was not in any particular hurry to get the radio back, but rather that he take his time, and check everything that other owners had problems that caused odd failures in this particular Kenwood radio.
While the radio was at Mikes, he sent me emails that described the various levels of progress and items that he had thus far corrected. To say the least, I was encouraged by these messages. Maybe I would be able to reliably operate this transceiver for some years to come.
Recently, I received a message telling me that I could pick up the repaired radio. He attached a statement outlining the parts that were replaced, and troublesome solder connections that he had tracked down and permanently repaired. It was an accumulation of these poor solder joints and thermal issues that caused the lack of reliability in an otherwise well-designed radio. Several transistors, diodes, a relay, and other small parts that were replaced, as well as a small knob that Mike chose to replace to make the radio look as good as it worked. A very nice touch that most repair shops would have overlooked, but Mike is very proud of his work… Justifiably so..!
Feedback scores on eHam range from 0 through 5, although I would have rated Mike’s work at an easy ‘10’, given the opportunity… In addition, I must mention the extremely reasonable labor charges that would have been much higher at other repair shops that charge a lot for each and every item on the repair list… So Mike, ‘FIVE’ it is… and a sincere, well-earned THANK YOU SIR…

| Repaired my Icom 271H |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
Mike raised my old Icom 271H from the dead again! He always knows exactly which aged part has failed too....zeroing in on it, using my description of the problem every time. This time, when the rig failed, he simply told me which resistor to replace which allowed me to repair the rig myself!! He didn't have to do this but has always been generous and kind-hearted. Point of fact, too....since he has posted many trouble-shooting tips on his web site. I don't know anyone else in the repair business who posts free repair tips!
Mike was also my tech of choice with the Icom 746 and before I upgraded to the 746Pro, kept mine going despite some poor construction issues Icom had with that model. Now, if my new Pro should burp, it will go to Mike for repair!

| Mike is a GOOD Guy! |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
Mike was very helpful to me when I was considering buying a radio that had known problems. After emails back and forth I decide to pass on that one. He then answered all my questions about another model I plan to get and sent me links to helpful websites as well. Even though he didn’t gain any revenue from our email exchange he gained me as a future customer if I ever need repairs on a radio that he works on. The one ZERO review below on this list is way out of line. It is obvious the reviewer did not read Mike’s website. Mike is a good guy!

Overall an excellent service experience.
I sent a Kenwood TS-60S to Mike for a Li battery and backlight replacement.
He discovered a subtle current drain discharging the battery sooner than expected, and replaced the offending part.
In the process he found and fixed several other problems.
I received frequent emails during the repair period to update me on status.
The repair invoice was detailed down to individual parts and the charges were very fair.
Mike is my number one choice for equipment repair.

My ic-756 ProII stopped Transmitting. Mike accepted my radio. He kept me informed all the way. The radio was back in my house in about 10 days. It arrived very clean and not damaged. It now works perfectly. It has been about 6 months. I would use Mike again in the future.
Thanks Mike!

| Big Mistake! |
Time Owned: 6 to 12 months. |
Well, I guess there has to be a first time for everything....
About a year ago I sent my 746 to mike for repair of a 2 meter receive problem. The communications went well, I sent the radio, Mike filed me in on the problem, made the "repair" and sent me back the radio.
Diagnosis was an overloaded receiver, possibly due to to the close proximity of another radio transmitting on 2mtr. He suggested I not connect a 2mtr antenna to the 746 while using another 2mtr transmitter nearby.
So...I get my 746 back, connect it to 6mtr (it's main use) and do not connect 2mtr as I have a 2mtr/70cm satellite rig that I use for 2 & 440. Recently, I took my 746 to my second home and found the 2mtr receiver still did not work.
TODAY, I sent off an email to Mike stating the radio still did not work, some details of my testing to be sure it did not work, and my disappointment in the fact that I paid for a repair that didn't seem to be accomplished. I also acknowledged the amount of time that passed and left him with the question of how he would handle this problem.
Here is where Mr. N1EQ lost ALL my respect and earned this wonderful review.....
He called me about 10 minutes after my email was sent.....It seems that if he screws up, you better not tell him about it! He told me he didn't like the "tone" of my email, (happily supplied to anyone interested, and without edits), he would have taken it back for repair if I wasn't such an "asshole", and "...how do I know what you did to the radio".....etc. I ended the call with him in mid rant! YIKES! That was the most unprofessional call I'd ever received....I couldn't believe it.
You would think that someone with such a good reputation would be able to handle a disappointed customer with a little more grace!
I could not possibly recommend this man to do business with. He may, or may not, have great technical skills, but his ability to deal with HIS OWN mistakes is severely lacking! |
