Heavy duty old fashioned radio. Something to keep. |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
Maybe I should give 5 stars, but I don't have it more than 3 months in my hands to unfold all it's capabilities.
Anyway it's more than 2 years since the previous review and I see that this site claims that this model is still in production, which is not.
I suppose that someone has to correct it. |

Medicore Receiver at best |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
Had this model but didn't keep it long. Just doesn't have very good selectivity and the receiver is weak for what it is. For a newbie, probably okay for a starter radio but the FT-950 is much better. Check out Sherwood's receiver data and it is low on the pole. |

Beautiful great DX-hunter Radio. |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
I used FT-2000 only for few months, and find, that this radio has many useful features for picking out weak signals.
Conveniently, there is a separate button and knob for each function. A minimum of time is lost for adjustment and control.
I got a very well tuned radio, and pulling out weak signals is just a pleasure.
When you press the NAR button, a weak signal stands out against the background of the soft noise of the air, and when you press the CONTOUR button, it seems to be separated from the air noise, and a weak CW-station is read like in a telegraph class. It's just fantastic)
And yes, the full-analog second receiver sounds just as great, it allows you to instantly switch to listening and transmitting on the second frequency in the SPLIT mode.
In comparison with my SDR-TRX (Elecraft KX2, ERMAK, SunSDR2DX), it showed itself very worthy. Decent transceiver. |

Excellent |

I've now owned my FT2K for 3 months and have to say that my opinion hasn't changed. All of the updates have been loaded without a problem and it is performing far better than others report about theirs. I can't say the learning curve has been steep because I haven't been in a hurry to master it. I'm taking my time and there is a lot of help available on the related reflectors and from the factory.
I can't deny that there have been/are issues yet to be resolved with this radio but, it still outperforms anything else I've owned or operated. It suits my modes and method of operation to a tee. To illustrate my experience ... I find that I need to use my amplifier when operating phone more often now that I can hear weak stations that I could not hear before (same antennas). I have also "discovered" that it's not about "S" meter readings ... it's about the noise floor and how far above it the signal is. The FT2K receiver has many, many features to help that and it takes time and practice to use them effectively.
The FT-2000 is not a "plug and play" radio ... it's really a revolutionary piece of equipment and among the newest batch of radios that are the wave of the future. If you don't want to devote the time to learn to use it, you won't be happy with the radio. This radio requires that you "operate" it, not just push the buttons.
For me, it's a keeper.
Update on 1/26/2021:
No change in my opinion of this terrific transceiver. Never had a bad report or issue with this radio operating SSB and CW on several HF frequencies. The receiver is competitive with anything on bands and transmit, using a Heil Bm-10 headset, will work anything I can hear.

First report / observations |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
OK, for an overview of my station and 'likes', see my preliminary review of one of my recent purchases, a FT-920....
Although I have the newer radios like the TS-890 and IC-7610, I really, really like the 'last generation' of radios. Just a died in the wool OF.
Anyway, I was so impressed with the FT-920, I started looking at a newer model. I found a "NEW" FT-2000 on eBay. It was unboxed, and stored in a cabinet. Still had the plastic across the display. Because the original packaging was long gone, I gave the seller instructions on how I would like the radio packed. It was only one state away (thankfully!).
Instead of the $40 initial shipping estimate, it was $115 and worth every penny! Best packing/shipping I've had in 3,000+ ePay purchases.
Back to the radio.... First thing I did was install a Inrad 300Hz CW filter and replaced the CR3022 battery. The old one was still +3VDC.
I made a cable to power the radio via an Icom PS-55. The internal PS worked perfect, but I despise heat in modern radios.
Upon power-up I was a bit disappointed in the audio. It was then I realized, most of the (MANY) knobs were off their preset positions. Duh!! RTFM!!!
I've been going through the Op Manual resetting everything and the radio is AMAZING!! The VHF Contest was this weekend and switching from the 'modern' radios to the FT-2000 was a wash. Yes, operating without a display is kinda old school (display is on the way), but my Drake TR-6 doesn't have a waterfall, either!
The LAST thing I wanted to say, the Icom 7300 is my most used radio! It's that good and that simple. And it cost about the same as the FT-2000!!!!!
I'll add an update somewhere down the road as I get used to the 2000......

Doing Well Now |
Time Owned: 6 to 12 months. |
Bought this rig used, came with the AC0C roofing filter upgrade. Had it on the air for about 30 days and, bang all of a sudden no transmit what so ever. Had to bite the bullet and have it repaired. Finals were toast, they said it looked like it had been very hot. It never got hot on me it just quit. Anyhow now it's back up and running, works great. I love Yaesu rigs, I love lots of buttons and knobs, I don't know why but I do. If you enjoy a good receiver and good reports this rig is for you. Many times I had wished I had kept my FT-1000MK5, but now after a few months I'm happy with the rig. You just never know what your gonna get when you buy used, but when your a low money type guy it just seems that way it goes. All in all it's a good rig, try to get the AC0C roofing filter and the Sub VFO filter, they both make this rig much nicer. |

Have this machine now for 2 weeks, first impression: Whauw!
very good receiver, nice sound from internal speaker. easy to operate, logical knob layout. good filtering!. everything you hear you can speak to. Very good to operate with crowded band or with QRM. look and feels like a solid device.
Much better then the disapointing FT-1000 that i traded in for this sophisticated piece of machinery.
you can't go wrong with the FT-2000

Anyone who knows me has a general idea of what I hear and work on 6M band.
The FT2000D I bought second hand over five years ago contributed to a heap of countries and the recent South and North American highly unusual and unexpected QSOs using JT65 mode. The 2000D worked so well on those opening running flat chat at 205 watts pep over the pole VE8, CE2, LU3 LU8 ZP5 CX6. The fans hardly kick in the finals are so efficient.
Just bought a brand new FTDX5000LTD put it in place of the 2000D, did a few checks on my reference beacons and promptly swapped back to the 2000D, basically the only addition is a Down East Microwave 6M preamap hanging on the back in the RX antenna slot.
FT2000D the poor mans FTDX5000 without the bells and whistles, it does the job for me with a seaamless interface using the SCU17 to WSPR, FT8 and JT65. |

Great Solid Rig |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
This rig had a lot of bad press from the pre PEP that skews the ratings.
I'll just cover some of the same things already mentioned.
No, I don't see a lot of difference in 3k and 6k roofing filters.
The DSP is pretty good, much better once I jad some seat time and learned how to adjust it.
Contour is a great tool.
Forget the DMU. I run an if-2000 and sdr-iq and it is now a fantastic rig. Programs like SDRdx (not well known) make filters that are brick walls and the panadapter is great with a fast gaming computer driving it with high fft numbers.
The D version is a terrific upgrade in my opinion as I run it in class A mode driving my Alpha. Nothing but stellar audio reports for last 5 years with a P-40 from dx bw and proc to 4k wide and equalized internally.
Add the external mtu filters and you have some real capabilities.
I was looking at upgrading to a ts990 or a ic7700/7851 recently and I decided with my computer + ft2000D I wouldnt be gaining anything except a little better roofing filter if I have ectremely strong sigs really close on contests. I've been there and a little adjusting of the rf gain and using conture, notch etc does more than make up for it. Multi/Multi and you might need better, but then your into the 8k + radios anyway.
Learn all the features at your disposal with this rig and I cant imagine needing more. |

From FTDX 3000 to FT2000D |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
If you are regular ham radio operator, who likes to rag chew with friend and don´t mind about DXing and serious contests, you should skip my comments from now.
I am serious contester and dxer, so I don´t care that much about ultra modern LCD screen radio or real time spectrum scope or others things built in with FTDX3000. I really care about ERGONOMICS and RECEPTION.
I am sorry for those who likes FTDX3000 but frankly speaking, I can´t compare 3000 with FT2000...no way... My FT2000 has the last Yaesu´s updated firmware and also the AC0C roofing filter installed in. The FT2000 with those changes seems another class of radio. This radio is now perfect for contests and dx´s. Good thing is FT2000´s prices are really down now and it´s a great opportunity for those who had a bad experience in the past, now to try it again.
For those who really likes the FTDX 3000, I would say that your radio is closer to FT 950 replacement than FT2000. No way to compare the FTDX3000 with FT2000. First of all, FT2000 has the second receiver build it and internal power supply, and for me that is really important since you like DX, chasing expeditions or being a contester. 2 x RX antenna in,VRF , Variable passband countour control, Adjustable Variable TX Bandwidth (up to 4Khz - not good for dx or contest..I prefer to keep it on 2.4Khz or less), VU smeter with many functions, you can control your Yaesu Rotor using the botton f1 to f5 buttons. Another good thing is the Ergonomics. Mostly all buttons and function are next your hand. If you check your FTDX3000 front face, you will see just few buttons and most of functions have to go into the menu in case you want to change some parameters. During a contest we can´t waste time entering in many menus to adjust something. That´s why I consider a FT2000 a very good contest radio, like the old FT1000D and FT1000MP series. I have also TS590S, FT1000MP, Icom IC746Pro, IC 751A, TS2000 to compare side by side, but in my opinion I can only compare the FT2000 with FT1000MP which is on the same level of competition.
Now it is time to get the FT2000 because the affordable prices.
