This system was marketed to marine VHF users and is no longer in production. They take audio from a VHF rcvr and use an electronically "rotated" antenna array to find direction of arrival using Doppler techniques. The DF antennas were poorly sealed and usually failed after a few years of use. It has decent VHF DF performance, especially offshore where signal reflections are minimal. The antennas are usually repairable requiring only a through rinse out, corrosion cleaning and perhaps some resoldering. Its the salt bridges that make them stop working. When properly sealed (lots of RTV on every seam and in every hole) they last a long time. Use stainless or plastic fasteners when reassembling. These ADF adaptors show up quite often at marine swap meets and can be picked up cheap. I got mine with an antenna and all cables for $50. Apelco makes a similar model but it seems to have more problems than the Regency. Si Tex makes a current version and it sells for around $800.
