I have a small residential lot, so large antennas just aren't going to happen. In order to get 80 - 10m I've tried various end feds and even a doublet. All worked to varying degrees, but I really wanted a highly durable and trouble free antenna that was easier to tune.

I ended up trying the Bushcomm SWC-100CS model. Even though this antenna is advertised as being for 5-30 Mhz, I took a chance anyway. The Bushcomm antennas are intended primarily for military, NGO's, and other HF utility type stations. They may not have the most cutting edge performance but they are very rugged and the designs are well documented and understood.

Once the antenna arrived I was impressed by the build quality. This antenna uses all stainless steel cables instead of copper clad wire. The balun is enclosed inside some sort of heavy duty nylon, and the load enclosures are made from the same material. All of the stainless hardware is top notch. This thing is very rugged and should last for many years. I also found that the balun had an integrated strain relief for the coax. This is a brilliant idea and should be an industry standard.

I hung the antenna on a 28' tall mini tower. One leg to the front of my house and the other to small tree in the opposing corner of the rear yard. The end result is a low inverted V that also looks like a horizontal V from above. I was concerned about this configuration but once I got it hooked up it worked fine. It seems this antenna is very forgiving in how it is deployed.

In testing, I found the antenna does indeed have a low enough SWR 80-10 meters and is usable without a tuner. I got the following SWR readings with no tuner in line:

80m 1.9
60m 1.3
40m 1.3
20m 1.1
17m 1.7
15m 1.9
12m 1.1
10m 1.2

I used the rig's internal tuner on 80, 17 and 15 meters to bring everything down to a nice flat match. The tuner was simply not needed on the other bands. Just for giggles, I tried the tuner on 160m and to my surprise it tuned right up! I doubt it will work well down there but at least it does work.

The noise floor on this antenna is pretty low. Much lower than my doublet. This had me concerned at first, but after a few minutes I got into a QSO with a guy in Idaho on 40 meters in the middle of the afternoon. This seemed promising. Later in the evening I had conversations with stations everywhere from a few hundred miles away out to 1200 miles.

All things considered, I'm very happy with this antenna. It does cost a bit more, but if you want or need a good general purpose utility antenna that just works and is trouble free then this might be a good option.

Additionally, when I bought this antenna I emailed Bushcomm with some questions and David Collins replied very quickly. He was a tremendous help and made me feel much better about purchasing the antenna. It also arrived from Australia about ten days sooner than projected!

Update July 12, 2021:

Got to test this antenna compared to a 40 meter dipole at 30 feet. The antenna receives about one S unit down from a dipole and the transmitted signal is definitely weaker than the dipole. That said, when the bands are open this antenna works fine and having the ability to quickly switch between bands is a big plus. This company makes a fair number of wire antennas using stainless steel as opposed to copper clad wire and they are much much stronger.

ever since Ive had this antenna it has held up my 15m pole in two directions. physically these antenna are unbreakable. even running to much power into it didn't break it. if you want a dipole that doesn't need tuning on any band 160 through 6m. use this.

nothing receives as quiet as this dipole does.
big signals without the noise.

fantastic customer service also. great to see that in amateur radio these days.
