Very Handy Tool			Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I ran out and bought one of these in February 08. I was out working on getting my 160 meter loop up in the air and needed to solder the ladder line to wire joints. It was cold enough that the 40 watt 12 volt iron was just not working. The Radio Shack butane iron was exactly what I needed. The heat is adjustable. So it can be used for other applications as well. This is a great tool for on-the-go use.

You will not go wrong. This butane powered iron uses an after burner technolgy. Similar to that of a super sonic jet. It is a modified cigarette lighter. However to get great equavalant wattage and control of such, a special metalergeric device is used. I would say one can vary the heat to emulate anything from 10-50W! The point is small enough for fine work. Not good enough for SMT of course. However one could easily construct the popular K-2 QRP SSB/CW rigs. Great for when you have no access to 12V, 110V, or any voltage source at all for that matter!!!! You simply fuel it up like any good windproof cigarete lighter. Turn the fuel to Max at first. Ignite(start) using matches or the supplied flint wheel. You will see blue flame at first exhausted thru the air ducts. Then a wire coil and special metallic polymer do the rest!!! Turn the fuel off completly, or set a constant level of fuel flow. Use the minimum to emulate a 15W iron. You can then stop the fuel completly. You will have 5 minutes of solder time. You may also elect to pulse the fuel for umlimited use. Go full thottle...You have a nice 50W+ Iron. Every other level from 10-50W(thermal equalant). It reminds me of a jet fighter after burner. It is simple. When one wants to go Mach 2 (1500mph) The hot exhuast of the conventional JET (JP-4 or JetA) ignites a contant flow of fual in the after burner. YUP..That is why you see flames at take off. What is amazing about this soldering iron, is the fact that you can stop the fuel completly. The special coil and metal stay hot enough to solder. One can even have the fuel off for 30 seconds. Thottle up...The soldering iron lights back up!!! For 10 bux you cannot go wrong! I am assuming these soldering Irons will not last forever. You might want to buy 2.
