4 Stars...But... Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Got this old radio at a hamfest cheap and had to add a power cord. Has the crossband mod and it works as it is supposed to. Modest size, never overheats and is basically sound.

But...

When the cmos memory battery gives out, you're in for a very special treat...let me tell you! Never in all my 46 years as a ham have I ever seen a battery hidden as expertly as in this radio. It's at least and hour and a half bench time (if you're an expert) to access and replace the 2032, and probably at least 6 cusswords to boot, not to mention wanting to throttle the buffoon who engineered this radio! I could have swapped out the control board or replaced the finals and biasing circuit in half that time. What a piece of work!

Well, it works for now, until the next major surgery to replace the battery...what a joke.

User friendly radio Time Owned: more than 12 months.
The TM-701 is a small, robust radio. What I mostly like is its easy use and of course the radio performances, which are great. The declared 25 W are all available and more than enough to allow clean contacts.

There are a couple of things which I do not fully appreciate:

- only 20 memory slots;
- very little keys.

Overall a very good radio.

limited memory Time Owned: N.A.
This rig is a great little piece of work. clean design, fairly user friendly. I picked mine up used and the wideband mod and the cross band repeater mod was already performed on it when I received it. both seem to work however the crossband mod is not terribly useful since it can only work simplex it cannot to shifts for using single band repeaters through it. The quantity of memories leaves a little to be desired which is the reason I could not give the rig 5 on 5. it is difficult to store all the frequencies that you use given only 20 slots.

Lot of radio in its day for the size! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I got one of these for the family car back in the early 90's. It was on sale for $399.00. I loved the looks and features of the rig. It's small size was also a plus. The 25w limit on both bands was not a problem. I did the cross-band repeat mod and the wideband mod to listem to public service. It was all in all a great little rig. The only reason I didn't give the rig a 5 was because every once in a while without reason or warning, the radio would loose it's memories. I would not hesitate to own another one...
