The newly released Kaito KA1107 is a dual conversion world band receiver that will keep you connected to a very comprehensive frequency range with analog tuning and readout. This radio has outstanding selectivity and sensitivity and transmits with a minimal amount of interference and feedback. If you plan on traveling with a radio, the KA1107 is a very good choice. You can either listen to the KA1107 via the built-in D77 mm speaker or with the included earphones. One thing unique about this radio is it comes with a quartz alarm clock and a sleep timer, which you can set from 1 minute to 2 hours. You won't find this feature in any other analog shortwave radios. The KA1107 powers on AC or 4 pieces of AA batteries, it also features a built-in battery charger, just plugs it into any wall outlet with the included AC adaptor and switch to CHARGE. Junk Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Really not too bad to listen to but not well built. I bought this in September 06. Last week the bottom half of the LCD indicator went blank. This week the other half. Now the radio will not cut off.

Lasted just over a year.

After purchasing and being extremely impressed with the Kaito 1103 I had high hopes for the 1107. (I actually purchased the Degen DE1107.) But my hopes weren't realized.

I do like the layout and the concept of the radio. It's ergonomically friendly and I like the sound. It's three sensitivity settings are a plus, and, at the "high" setting, it's very similar in sensitivity to the KA1103. But that's also where things go wrong.

At the high sensitivity setting there are ghosts and bleeding stations everywhere. It's hard to separate the legitimate signals from MW bleedovers. And this occurs 15 miles from a 1KW MW station! The middle setting solves the problem somewhat, but the bandwidth is too wide to prevent strong stations from drowning out weaker signals on nearby frequencies.

But the real "killer" is the background noise on MW. It's more than a hiss. It's a very fast clicking sound that is obviously genereted by the radio's own internal circuitry. (The 1104 has the same problem on MW.) The noise is audible on every station, including two 50KW powerhouses less than 100 miles away. I'd rate is as virtually useless on MW.

Kaito / Degen -- if you're listening -- take the circuitry of the 1103 and the ergonomics of the 1107 and make an even better multiband portable, not just another model with a higher number and poorer performance.

I really liked the sensitivity, image rejection and selectivity, and the audio isn't bad either. That was the first month, but then everything started falling apart, warping or corroding. OK, Okinawa is hot, humid, and salty, but I refuse to look at another cheap Chinese radio (excpt maybe Sangean). One peek inside the box and you can see why it's sold cheap.
