Performs really well Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Have had one of these since 1989. It was given to me because some time in its life someone had played with the 20 Mx trap and had shifted its location and hence resonance to below 13.5Mhz. Once this was fixed it went well. Roof mounted with at least 2 radials per band it did great. Often a match for low strung 3 el trapped yagis in the neighbourhood.

I added a linear and found it could compete well.

We shifted location and refurbished the vertical with new trap caps etc. Hy-gain support was great.

This time it is roof mounted over a full metal roof with no radials. Seems to go as well as the last site with radials.

Its no big beam but for spacial impact and cost (nothing) I am really delighted.

I guy mine at the top of the 20 Mx trap with 4 very light nylon guys. The wind is then no worry.

Intend to keep this thing forever and use when in a condo!

A basic vertical Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Used one of these as my only full time antenna while living in N.D. from 1984-87. It's a basic, old style trap vertical. Ran it both roof mounted and ground mounted with a bare min of radials. In practice I could see no difference, though theoretically the roof mnt should have been more efficient. One of the traps mechanically failed from continued flexing in the N.D. winds. Like most "OK" antennas, you can make a lot of contacts with one of these, but don't expect to punch through any pileups.

I started working DX the day I took this down and put up a 66' Zepp. This was a authentic Zepp, I end fed the wire with one side of ladder line. I did keep the 14AVQ as an emergency back up antenna but can't recommend it much. With a sufficient number of radials, some folks have had better luck.
