Review Summary For : Yaesu SP-9000 Speaker
Reviews: 11MSRP: 400
Description:
The Yaesu SP-9000 is designed to match the FT-9000 series. The SP-9000 features two 4 inch (100 mm) speakers, affording independent audio paths for the Main and Sub VFO output; the left speaker puts out Main VFO audio, while the right speaker yields Sub VFO audio, and a front panel switch also allows you to combine the audio signals from both receivers for mixed distribution from the two combined speakers. This produces an effective aperture of 8 inch (200mm), for outstanding tonal quality. The audio filters provide three steps of high-cut (2400/1000/700 Hz) and two steps of low-cut filtering (500/300 Hz), and each audio path (Main/Sub) may be filtered independently, allowing you to experiment with optimum settings in a diversity dual reception filtering mode. And you also get individual mute switches, useful for dual receive operation.

Easy to use- Works better than advertised Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I've used this on my FTDX9000D for several years and I've also used it on my Icom 7800 and my Icom 756 ProII

It is really made for Dual receive radios, but it works well with single receivers. The filters work wonders on incoming signals. Well worth the investment.

Outstanding!! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Ham operators say put all your money in an antenna, I beg to differ, maybe the speaker!

What a speaker! The SSB / is now FM sound..

I know a $370 speaker is expensive, but what a joy, it works so well, almost like I got a ne transceiver!

If I ever get out of Ham radio, the speaker will be the last item I sell (The SP9000, from Yaesu)

Excellent!! Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I have owned a variety of external speakers in the last 40 years and my search for the *Perfect* speaker ended with the purchase of the SP-9000.

The separate left/right speakers work great with my TS-2000's two receivers, or, between two different rigs (i.e. - TS-2000/FT-991A).

Yes, it's expensive if you buy it "NEW", but if you're patient you can find one second-hand for around $250 or less (just make sure the price includes shipping because this IS a beast).

The only negative I can tell you about would be its enormous size (the dimensions are 9.8"W x 7.2"H x 17.3"D), so make sure you have room on your desk to put it (I ended up selling one of my HF rigs to open up enough room for it to sit).

Highly recommended Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I acquired a used SP-9000 years ago from a SK. While transporting it in the back of my Ford van with other equipment, it got squashed about 1/3 from the rear - a real bad squash. Not repairable! I sawed the caibnet in to about 7.5" from the front - that part I was able to straighten out. I removed the rear panel, which was not damaged and fitted it to the shortened cabinet. A little sanding and painting and it looked pretty good. Now, how does it sound? The best sounding speaker for Ham Radio I have ever heard - licensed since 1959, I have had a lot of speakers over the years but this one is surely the best ever. Now I know why hams pay $400 - worth every cent of it.

Pricey, but the best so far Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I've been using a SP-9000 for a few years. I've found it provides a good balance between fidelity and clarity. In comparison, the other OEM speakers I have owned, include the Kenwood SP-990, Icom SP-20, and Yaesu SP-757, SP-5 and SP-8.

I recently downsized my station, and sold off the majority of my transceivers and matching speakers. Three HF rigs, a SP-990 and a SP-9000 speaker remain. I've always enjoyed owning the aesthetically matching speakers for my HF transceivers. I currently own a TS-990S and FTDX-3000D.

I've thought about selling the SP-9000, and replacing it with the new matching speaker for the FTDX-3000, the SP-20. However, I was concerned that the smaller SP-20 will not be as good as the SP-990 or the SP-9000.

Since I sold my FTDX-9000, I have been using the SP-9000 with the TS-990S, rather than using the matching SP-990. Last night, I tried using the SP-990 with the TS-990S. I was a bit shocked by the difference, and it was not good. The sound produced by the SP-9000, it simply sounds considerably better than the Kenwood SP-990.

The SP-990 sounds flat and tinny, the SP-9000 has a much fuller range, and is much more pleasing for my style of operating, and that is mostly SSB, without making the received audio sound to mushy.

In comparison to all the OEM speakers I have owned, I would say the SP-9000 has proven to be the best.

Superior Speaker System Time Owned: more than 12 months.
This is a follow-up review after my initial praise of the SP-9000 speaker system several years ago. Here we are a number of years later and I have only increased my supply of SP-9000 speakers to four...Yes, I have four Yaesu SP-9000 speakers. I find the Yaesu speakers very easy on the ears compared to that which is offered by the competitors. I have one SP-9000 for use with an FTdx9000D; two more for use with a pair of IC-7800s; and the fourth is used with a Kenwood TS-990. [The speaker system that goes with the FTdx5000 is also a great system. So, there was no need for another SP-9000 for use with the FTdx5000!] They even match the radios pretty well in height and design. Even from just a short distance away, the SP-9000s look like they were made to go with the IC-7800s! They do not look out of place right next to Icom radios. I long ago sold my Icom speaker which I purchased along with an IC-7800. Furthermore, the matching speaker for the IC-7800 did NOT have two separate speakers! A radio with two receivers, really needs two speakers. I will not be giving up my SP-9000s any time soon. Now that I have gone to rack-mounting, they look just fine on top of the racks grouped in pairs. See my web-site:

I highly recommend the SP-9000 system...de W3DCB Daniel

Of course, I originally purchased the speaker system because it matches the Yaesu FTdx9000D which I recently aquired from HRO. I also have an Icom IC-7800. Unfortunately, the SP-20 which is made to go with the IC-7800 only has a single speaker in it. After using the Yaesu speaker with the Yaesu FTdx9000 for a time, I ordered another one to use with the Icom IC-7800 as well. I sent back the Icom SP-20 speaker unopened. Two receivers require 2 speakers! This was quite an oversight by Icom, although the 7800 is superb! I certainly would not have room enough for 2 Icom SP-20's, although some are actually doing just that. The Yaesu SP-9000 is not a bad match for the IC-7800 either...a bit taller, but hardly noticeable -- to me at least. The Yaesu speaker sounds wonderful. Better fidelity is achieved by pressing the button which allows one to use both speakers simultaneously. Then, when needed, they can be easily split once agin. There are 2 seperate filter systems for both speakers and they work well. I am very pleased with both of my Yaesu SP-9000 speakers! No plans to replace or change them...

Very good speaker Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
Have not heard any better sound but that that
comes out from sp-9000 at this price range.
Very comfortable to listen to even with any other trcvr. A little bit large in size but perfectly matches
my FTdx9000C radio anyway.
Great product Yaesu. TNX!!!!

Very Impressed! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I recently purchased one of these for my 9000D, and I must admit I am quite pleased with both the sound quality it produces, and the build quality that went into it. The speaker is a perfect compliment to the transceiver, and I can't say enough about it's design and function.
It's nice to see that Yaesu, at least, is supportive of it's high end equipment when it comes to providing properly-matched accessories.
