Like most hams, I've soldered lots of coax
connectors. It's a particular problem on small
cable like RG-58, where the heat needed to solder
the braid often deforms the dielectric.

A better solution, and the one most professionals
use, is a crimp-type connector. In this case,
an inexpensive tool (< $30) lets you use
connectors that cost only $1.05 in quantities of
25. No heat is involved. Using a suitable tool,
like the Eagle 382-301C, you apply three crimps
to the connector -- one for strain relief over
the jacket, one for the braid and one for the
center contact. It takes less time to do than
to describe.

A club could invest in the tool, and let
members use it to make up coax jumpers
quickly.

Why "4" instead of "5"? Well, the connector
is not weatherproof (like any UHF connector),
so you need to protect it carefully if it's
installed outdoors.
