Excellent microphone at a good price. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I have been using a Behringer XM8500 which is no slouch in the mic for Kenwood department. However I have been wanting to try other mics and I found this used for half off the new price. I couldn't turn it down so it arrived a few days ago.
It has a stronger punch to my ears than the Behringer. The highs are there but so are the lows and even more surprising the mid range.
I had to dial back my settings on the TS870 for the processing and mic gain due to the full range being present now in the audio.
I may be the only one to think this ,but the Behringer next to this sounds a little tinny. At least for my voice.
I used it this weekend on the TS870 and a portable base-loaded vertical and I was able to contact stations right away after only a couple of tries and the reports were pretty good. I'll have better results when I get my main antenna back up in the air.
I worked with the settings just using monitor and a dummy load and I didn't touch the transmit equalizer at all from where I had it set previously.

Sounds Great! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have owned & used my SM-58 for several years as a vocal microphone & have been very happy with the way it sounds.I only use it for performing my Classic Country Music & Gospel Music & never with a transceiver. It was designed for what myself & thousands upon thousands of performers use it for every day but I understand it really sounds great on the air as well so I may give it a try sometime & see how if stacks up against my HEIL PR-20.

Really solid mic Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Why someone would rate an SM58S a zero because they bought a fake SM57 is beyond me. ???

That said, as everyone else as pointed out so well, the SM-58S is a great communications mic. Dynamic rather than condenser so it may need some boost especially for an Icom. I just run it through a small mixer I use then through the W2IHY IPlus into both an IC-7000 and IC-7300. Built like a tank and great, flat response you can process as you choose.

Super Microphone Time Owned: more than 12 months.
The SM-58 is pretty much the most used vocal microphone in the world. It works great with a transceiver, with just the right frequency response curve for speech communication. Clear, crisp, natural, and uncolored, it simply works well. Rugged, these things have weathered more tours of travel concert duty than anything else, so you know it has to be a solid performer. Same for the Shure SM-57 which typically costs about $20 less - probably the most often used studio recording and utility PA/recording/performance microphone ever. Every self-respecting recording engineer has a pair of these in his mic tool box. Really. Solid performance and good value for the money.

Just MY take. // James - K8JHR //

Bulletproof! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Needed a desk mic for my Icom 746. Dug out a 30 year old Shure SM58 that I had used for years with a band. Built an interface to block the DC coming from the radio (ICOM feature??) and get great reports. Sounds more full than my Heil Pro headset (5 cartridge) You can find then all day for $50 used. The SM57 is a little sharper on the high end than the SM58, but both mics are incredibly resistant to being overdriven.

Good Microphone Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I use one with my Orion II and it sounds great. Shure SM58s have been around for decades and used by many professional singers and sound professionals. It is not that expensive either, about $99.00 new and can be had for around $40 to $70 used. They'll easily keep up with Heil mics which, in 30+ years as a broadcast engineer, are way over priced for there performance. Try a SM58 or SM57 and you'll be pleasantly surpised.

Shure SM58S to Kenwood 940SAT Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I had a Shure SM58S vocal mike in my closet. Noted the 3 pin XLR connector, and E-mailed Bob Heil to ask if they made a 3pin XLR to 8-pin Kenwood. He said yes, so I ordered one. Ofcourse he told me the PR-20 was THE mic for my Kenwood. Anyways, received cables in nice order and hooked it up. Was able to get good audio from the SM58S with or with out processing. Nice, heavy, well built microphone and works sweet on my TS-940SAT.
Reports have been good.
