Versatile, does LF-HF Time Owned: more than 12 months.
This was 1970s design using ICs, discrete transistors and one tube. 200 KHz to 26 MHz continuous coverage including AM broadcast band. It is a 150 watt type accepted shipboard radio that can do LF CW as well as HF USB and AM rduced carrier (AME). LSB requires an optional 9 MHz filter. Synthesized in 0.1 KHz steps using BCD switches to set freqs. Uses a 918M xmtr and 490M antenna coupler (an EXCELLENT coupler). Early models had RF feedback problems, but it can be corrected through mods using ferrite beads etc. There is a service bulletin form Collins on this fix. There is a 24 VDC inverter that can be used to run the set on DC. Lightning fast autotune in xmtr final. Everything is on cards or plug in modules. Was used on lot on MSTS ships during Viet Nam war. Canadian Coast Guard used them too and had their own version of the 490M coupler that included an isolation amp. Not GMDSS compliant so they are available at reasonable prices when you can find one. Not too good as a ham set as freqs are set with switches, but it would be easy to make an up-down BCD variable rate counter to turn this into a tunable set.
