Sony Classic Shortwave Receiver Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
After 5900W,the next Sony is 6800W Synthesized Dual Conversion Receiver in Orange label.
Analogue tuning with LED frequency readout on MW & SW with 29 bandswitching, RF gain and pres-selector switch.

Terrific reception just with whip antenna alone. SWL in full HF from 0.5 to 30 MHz. Very strong sound from speaker with tonal controls, BCL in FM is a pleasure.

A classic of Japanese shortwave receiver in early 80's before the infux of others. Timeless design, well built and good quality.

Very, very good Time Owned: more than 12 months.
This receiver looks very much like the photo for the 6700, and I have no idea of the differences. However, I bought this almost by accident - I was in the market for a small transceiver, and the seller of that (an Icom 707) also had this receiver for sale for a VERY reasonable price. Its provenance is impeccable. It was bought in Tokyo by the Australian Embassy (receipts were included in the sale to me!) and one of the shiny-suits there bought it from the Aust government when he was transfered back to Oz. Couple of problems - on AC it runs on the Japanese grid voltage of 100volts, and the FM band only covers 75 to 90 Mhz. No problem, it runs on a wall wart 12 volts or c cells, and I have another system for FM anyway.
The ICF-6800 is a substantial receiver, covers am, ssb and cw, and fm. It has afc, af gain and a host of other knobs deemed essential to the unwary. However, the rig delivers. On a simple wire antenna, it delivers all the stations I want - DW, VoA, BBC and thousands of local asian stations. It is a very very good radio indeed, and I will not be selling it! If you find one (I paid Aus$80 for this one) then buy it and you will never regret it.
Kind regards
