Good for newcomer Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I used my Ft77 with a multiband dipole, about 40 metres long. I did a lot of dx on 15 and 20 meters. The rx is very sensitive but it was completly overloaded on 40 and 80 meters.I guess it´s good for mobile use with short antennas.I couldn´t get out more than 50 watts on SSB, but 100 on cw.I bought an extra cw filter and I was very happy with it.Sold it because a friend wanted to have it.

This is a classic ! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
When I first got my licence I struggled with bits of qrp kit that I had put together rather poorly. A good learning experience but very frustrating.

With the FT77 I was in heaven ! Narrow filter on CW, gorgeous sound, and later when I added an outboard Datong Automatic RF Speech Processor (Superb!) I worked DX on SSB as well as CW.

In the 80s I worked thousands and thousands of QSOs and I just can't fault this rig. OK, well maybe the rubber dial has perished over the years (they tell me they all do that, and replacements are available) but apart from that you get what you need to work the world on CW and SSB.

And what a nice clean simple design. OK, it doesn't have many modern functions but it does have a sound quality that you just don't get on modern synthesised rigs.

It doesn't stand up in performance terms against more assured modern designs but its a nice radio.

amazing quiet receiver...fb noise banker rigth if radio Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
it is the second 77 ft that I buy.
this radio has the best noise blanker ever built. the receiver is incredibly silent the power in cw is adjustable from zero to 110 watts and therefore I can drive my 28/144 mhz transverter. there is a lack of the narrow filter cw which is a must.
what to say I always use this rtx even having other hf radios ... if you find it buy it immediately before it is sold ... it is now a rare radio to find.

Great little transceiver Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have bought it 12 years ago for about 180$ like new with AM board installed.
It have a very good sensitive receiver and a gread sound reproduction.
It is very simple, a kid can use it without problems .

The VFO are smooth, about 19 kHz for one turn. The clarifier will move to +/- 2.5Khz

I have added an APF/Notck board (from FT-101): I have used the "mark" button to switch on/off the filter and the squelch knob to tune it.
I have replaced the mic/drive knob in a double potentiometer (from FT-757) to tune SSB and CW/AM power independently.

The AM receiver are a little bit "muddy", sound havo too much bass frequencies.

The original VFO knob was be replaced by a FT-757 one, it is just perfect! The shaft and bezel have same diameters. A IC-751 one is good but a little bit biggest than the original.

When purchased it have about 150 Watts, I tune it properly to 100 (1.7 dBm difference between 100 and 150 W but 50% more heating!).
The SSB pep power is 60/80 W when in right ALC levels.

It will about 10/15 minutes to stabilize VFO and frequency readout.

I use it with a Astatic D104-M6B mike and the signals reports are very good.

Meanwhile, my model have some littles bugs: in lowest bands and in CW mode, it is impossible to lower the power to 5/10 Watts for QRP operations and I have only 60W instead of 85 in the highest bands... I try to tune it as described in service manual but power do not rise on high bands (I replaced the final TR but the results are the same).
In TX, CW mode, the frequency drift a little bit.

The schematic is simplest, If your model is broken, you can repair it with a cheapest and readily avalaibles parts.

Finally, beside theses minors problems, I keep it because I love it!
I think is a good minimalist transceiver.

excellent receiver Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
i bought this rig on ebay.de, it is one later serial from circa 1984 near mint conditions. my ft
has cw-n 600 hz filter, marker unit and fm.i was really impressed by the extremely quiet receiver. excellent the attenuator on 40/80 meters, once enabled eliminates the noise and the receiver is still capable to copy the vy weak cw signals.vy gud also the noise blanker wide/narrow settings via the under top cover swithc. i'm only cw novice op. and have a fantastic job with both the ft 77's
full or semi break in capabilities. also vy clear cw audio tone!!
on tx side...yes some semiaudibles cw key clicks, but i do not have nearby om!!
my ft 77 delivers abt 160 watts on 40/80....a real punch on low bands!!
i highly recommend buying if you find one, but very take care to it being fully working conds.

FINALE THOUGHTS ON A GOOD VENERABLE OLD LADY Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I HAVE HAD THIS RADIO FOR 2 WEEKS NOW AND HAVE FITTED THE 300 HZ CW FILTER.
THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTS OF SSB BEING A BIT LOW I HAVE TRYED THE CLUBS KENWOOD TS-140 SPEACH SHOWS 48 WATTS SAME AS THE FT-77 BUT BLOW IN THE MICROPHONE YOU GET 100 WATTS INTO THE DUMMY LOAD.
SO I THINK ITS NORMAL AND NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT.
WELL AS FOR THE RADIO IT IS VERY WELL MADE INSIDE AND LOOKS LIKE A VERY GOOD ROLEX WATCH VERY TIDY LOOKED AS IF ITS NEVER BEEN REPAIRED,JUST HAD THE FM BOARD AND MARKER BOARD FITTED.
THEN I FITTED THE CW FILTER AND IT HAS ALL THE OPTIONS NOW.
I CAN SAY IT WORKS VERY WELL ON CW AND DIGIMODES YOU NEED TO LET IT WARM UP FOR AN HOUR OR SO AND THE DRIFT VERY LOW I LEFT IT FOR 3 HOURS AND IT DID ONLY DRIFT 100 HZ MUCH LESS THE THE STATED 100 HZ EVERY 30 MINS.
THE RECIEVE IS VERY NICE AND HAS A GOOD SIGNAL TO NOISE RATIO MUCH MORE THAN A LOT OF THE SO CALLED NEW GARBAGE OUT THERE.
THIS RIG MAY BE OLD BUT IT HAS LASTED ALMOST 30 YEARS SEE IF THE NEW STUFF LASTS THAT,I DONT HOLD MUCH HOPE IT WILL BEET THIS OLD GIRL.
SO IF YOU SEE A GOOD ONE BOXED LIKE THE ONE I GOT I SAY BUY IT AND I THINK YOU WILL BE PLEASED WITH IT AND IT WONT COST MORE THAN 275 QUID FROM A RADIO SHOP WILL A THREE MONTHS WARRENTY,CANT BE BAD CAN IT...............JEFFREY M6GLH..ENGLAND..

simple bit like me,got this as it was as good aas new boxed,no speach proccesor thats all that i dont like about it.
has a new vfo knob not the original type but it looks as if its was on there from new,i use the datong FL3 for cw and it works like it was made for the rig much better than having a poor cw rock filter.
got this from a radio shop this friday it got here in 18 hrs,now that can not be bad, good on you radio world, well might as well give them a plug.
i will get a good power microphone for it as its a little low on ssb due to no speach procceser.
thanks jeff

A pleasant surprise... Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I got my well-used FT-77 at a ham radio flea market in May 2006 for a good price. After cleaning up the front panel, repainting the case, wiring up a replacement DC power cord, and wiring up a replacement mic - I'm back on HF again. It could still use a replacement rubber ring for the main tuning knob.

I'm very impressed with how well it works.

The receiver seems pretty good, but it is affected by adjacent channel QRM (not the narrowest filters in USB mode). The noise blanker actually works, knocking down power line buzz by about 2 S-units.

Reports say that my Xmit audio is good (I'm using a rewired ICOM HM-35 hand mic). The nominal 100 watts seems to be sufficient to compete in the pile-ups.

Great radio Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have owned my FT77 for over a year now I quite like its performance. It has a user friendly uncluttered face which makes it a breeze to operate. I also have the optional CW filter and the FM boards installed. It has very good transmit and receive sides on all bands.

Even though I have newer rigs, I still prefer to use this radio and it will stay in my shack for a long time. An excellent radio, and a good choice for those with a limited budget or for the beginner!
