Not worth the money! Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
If you are considering purchasing a digital trunking scanner and the two scanners you are considering is Radio Shack's Pro 2096 and Uniden/Bearcat BCD 996T get the 996T. They are both the same money but the 996T is far and away a better featured scanner. The Pro 2096 is a beginners scanner. The 996T is for the more advanced scanner user. The 996T is a bit daunting to program by hand. If you are planning to monitor APCO 25 or other digitally trunked systems, the Pro 2096 has an annoying trait of stopping on the control channels and gives the irritating noise. The 996T has a feature to skip that annoyance. The audio on the 2096 is acceptable for a scanner. The 2096 has old fashioned memory arrangement, banks and channels. The 996T uses dynamic allocated memory. A much more efficient way of using memory. The Pro 2096 has been returned to Radio Shack to repair the digital readout. This is a common problem with the 2096. The scanner was only four months old.
