Review Summary For : GlobatSat BR-355 Serial GPS Receiver
Reviews: 3MSRP: 59.99
Description:
The BR-355 GPS Receiver can be utilized in a variety of applications which require GPS signals to be received and decoded in your Windows laptop or tablet PC, and for Mac users, their iBooks or Powerbooks. Compatible with most all NMEA compliant third-party software, the BR-355 is suitable for use in vehicle, marine and aviation navigation, as well as commercial and municipality applications such as fire trucks, police cars, buses, GIS data collection and much more!

The BR-355’s slim profile housing is completely waterproof and incorporates an active patch antenna for the highest level of GPS accuracy. The BR-355 requires either the USB or Serial RS232/PS2 cable set to function (sold seperately).

Placement of the GPS receiver anywhere within the vehicle will usually get sufficient GPS signal reception, but in those rare occurrences when towering high-rises offer challenging satellite reception, simply place the BR-35r on the vehicle’s roof (attaches with its built-in magnet) for improved reception.

Since power is transferred through your PC's USB port or the keyboard port, depending on which cable set is connected. Data is also transmitted to the USB port or the RS232 port depending on which cable set is used.

Using this with TM-D710 Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I've been very pleased with this GPS receiver. It's installed in my car between the headline and the metal roof and gets a solid lock within seconds of pulling out of the garage.

I'm using a cheap cell phone charger that I bought on clearance to power the unit, works great, couldn't ask for anything more.

Beats the heck out of my olf yellow etrex Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I cliped off the BR-355's connector and wired it to a plug for my TH-d7ag and powered it with a power converter chip fed off of the TH-d7ag battery...what a nice setup!

The gps locks on quickly and holds its lock pretty well...and about a million times better then my yellow garmin etrex.

The BR-355 has a lower battery drain then my etrex AND the BR-355 is WAAS enabled. WAAS is the free GPS accuracy system in teh US that improves GPS accuracy in specially equipped GPS units...such as the BR-355.

I do not believe the new Yaesu gps unit for the VX-8r is WAAS enabled....but my old TH-D7ag is with the BR-355!

Excellent APRS GPS choice Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
If you are looking for a simple and self contained GPS receiver, this one is it. You can choose to use the 6-pin mini-DIN plug and adapt it to your own APRS needs or remove the mini-DIN connecting the required four wires for a simple solution.

While such a unit lacks the obvious touch screen features other GPS units provide, it does in fact is a solid, fast GPS solution for the D700A and possibly other APRS radios. I have located the D700A main unit away from the control head. The BR-355 is an excellent GPS choice in this kind of installation. I can still use a full-feature touch screen GPS unit up front. I will add to this review should the need arise.
