double sided headset w/electret boom mic Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I've tried alot of headset/mic combos over the years and this is the best one of the lot (including the more famous and much more expensive ones). The set comes with very comfortable over the ear headphones and a fully adjustable boom mic. Both the phones and the mic have 1/8 inch stereo plugs and a 1/8 to 1/4 adapter is supplied for the phones or the mic. A 1/8 stereo jack on a short pigtail to your rigs standard mic plug is all you need and you're in business. You also receive a removable in-line battery box(two AAA batteries) for mic element power. This can be unplugged and removed if you have a later ICOM rig with voltage on the audio line. I run the headset with an ICOM 746 PRO and also a KENWOOD 870S. I have used an ELECTROVOICE RE 27 boom mic for the last few years and when I first tried the YAMAHA headset, most thought I was still on the RE 27 and some said it even sounded better. To me, that is a very positive endorsement of the YAMAHA CM 500 headset. BY the way, be ready to turn your mic gain back cause this setup will drive the snot out of your rig. After I put mine on the air, at least 7 or 8 of my regular rag chew buddies ordered a set and all were impressed with this headset, although a few don't like the double side headphones. Of course, you can easily remove one side and solve that problem. All in all, I think most who try the YAMAHA CM 500 headset will be very impressed. As a test, get your mic gain adjusted by using the monitor in your rig into a dummy load and then get on the air with your group and don't tell them anything. I think you will be surprized with the positive comments you receive. I would rate this set higher but 5 is as high as I can go. Get yourself a set and enjoy.
