A hardy transceiver Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I can only echo N4JOY with his comments. I operated an FT221RD (digital display version) some years ago which easily coped with life in the shack, on weekend field trips and life in mobile use at the time in an elderly Land-Rover. It was replaced by an FT-225RD but an FT221 is still a great radio to use and enjoy.

Great performer, well built transceiver Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I recently purchased my excellent condition FT-221R from a fellow ham on eBay. If you happen to find a 221 at a reasonable price, definitely consider purchasing this rig. Being all mode, users have the selection of USB, LSB, CW, FM and AM (a mode lacking in many "all mode" VHF transceivers). Standard 600 KHz repeater offset is supported (normal and reverse).

Although lacking a digital display, the analog dial is easy to use and read from. Features lacking though is the ability to decrease/increase RF output and CTCSS tone support. In summary though, the 221 offers performance comparable with more modern rigs -- with the addition of a nostalgic appearance.
