Handy, actually! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
For the price (I paid $5 for it at a garage sale) it's a pretty good deal. It operates off of two D cells which have lasted at over a year so far. It has an earphone out jack, a 3v power in jack, a volume control, tuning knob and a switch to change bands: simplicity itself. The little (it's still nearly twice as large as a Kaito 1102) radio has a nice hefty feel, thanks to its two big batteries lending their weight.
Pros: Reasonable speaker sound; as good as my RS DX380
-Simple to operate
-Unit comes with a sort-of shortwave guide
-Cheap or inexpsnsive, if you prefer--if you only pay $5)
-It has a nylon loop to hold onto (not sure I'd trust it)
-Batteries are overkill for size and last almost their shelf-life
-If you miss a station on one part of the dial you might find it on another part (that also includes FM where the same FM station shows up on 25 MHz apart)
-No fears about losing it
Cons
-The "12th" band is the "TV band" which is part of the FM band
-Very little spurious signal rejection
-Dial is only mildly "accurate", but heck, you're just looking for any kind of signal anyway with this
-No stereo on FM (sometimes it's barely mono)
-No carrying handle or case (for under $10???)
So...why give it a "4"? It actually works, the sound isn't terrible, it really does pick up stuff, it's appealing in its own plebeian way, and with two D cells, it'll run until the Yankees pay minimum wage to pitchers. Oh yeah, if you don't pay over $5 (don't), it's almost free.
