Average Radio at a High Price Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I bought the DTS-09 cos I love using these types of radios for aeronautical SSB; in this class, I have a Tecsun PL600, Eton E5, Roberts R861, SONY ICF7600DS, and a SONY ICF7600GR.I just got mine from an Ebay seller in China; good packaging, impressive box, suave suede bag , zip box with pocket to transport the radio, extendable wire aerial, earphones, power supply and a 3.5mm jack-to-jack cable (assumed to be for connecting to a PC or something else).
The operators manual was ok, but some of the instructions were clearly directly translated so some of the wording ended up causing more confusion than providing clarity.

The radio itself is dark grey with a large lcd display; buttons are very similar to the Eton E5. Left hand side has sockets for external aerial, line-in, dx/local switch, and mains power.
Right hand side has a dial which doubles up between fast/slow tuning and volume control, narrow/wide switch, news/music switch, fine tuning dial for SSB (sunk too low in case and , as a result, difficult to use), and line out socket.

The display has all the usual ; large frequency and band figures/letters which are good, mode indicator, an lcd replication of the classic needle strength indicator dial, page/channel indicator, a volume level indicator and a battery strength gauge. In addition, there is also date and time, and a temperature indicator (this is way-off and has not shown anything below 21 degrees C since Ive bought it).

OK so first impressions for FM and MW, it performs ok and sound seems reasonable; on SW its a shocker as follows:
The readout is 1 khz off so I have to input all the frequencies as n+1 khz.
The sound is appalling and is muffled even after fiddling around with the dx/lOCAL and tone switches.
I also tried using some decent headphones to see if it was only the speaker, but the poor quality was evident also in the headphones.
Any kind of signal which my PL600 is borderline in handling, is completely distorted and overloads the DTS-09.
As I said above, there is a temperature gauge which is a gimmick rather than a feature.
The SSB fine-tune is unfriendly to use as stated above.

Yes it looks a smart radio, but my overriding perception is that its an FM radio with poor SW circuitry thrown in; its more expensive than the E5 or the PL600, and is nowhere near the standard of these, let alone a SONY.
Nice bag and box nevertheless, something to keep my other radios safe when travelling.
