A nice budget priced five band general coverage radio. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
This is one of the last general coverage radios made by Allied Radio just before Radio Shack bought out the company. This is a nice radio meant for a beginner. This would be a very good introduction to ham radio. It was made around 1970. It has an all metal case compared to the Realistic 150 which has a mostly cardboard back piece. It looks like it might have been a prototype for a kit. The parts are widely spaced on several circuit boards and the Japanese construction looks execellent.
It has always amazed me what good results can happpen when the electrical parts are put in the right place. This radio doesn't have a lot of parts in it but it still has very good performance for a budget radio. The tuning capacitor has a small gear drive connected to it with a string pulley system which gives very smooth tuning. The band spread capacitor tunes nicely to. It is easy to tune in a SSB signal. The main display is somewhat hard to read because of the lighting system used,( kind of dark). The drift of this radio is somewhat better then DX-150. The actual performance is about the same as the DX-150. This radio was good enough to give enjoyment plus getting the beginning ham to upgrade to a more ham orientated ham radio, when more money becomes available. To sum it up a DX-150 clone ( this is meant as a compliment ) since I gave a DX-150 a (4) rating.
