A lower price Trans Oceanic clone. Time Owned: more than 12 months.
This is a six band general coverage radio made to compete directly with the Zenith Royal 7000 Trans Oceanic. It is heavy for a portable, with a very attractive almost all chrome and black finish.
Just like a Trans Oceanic it has a heavy metal door covering the tuning display. Basically it has chrome all over the entire front. Again, just like a Trans Oceanic it runs on 8 D cells or optional plug into the wall. Because of the power requirements the D cells will last for hundreds of hours. This radio sold in the early 60's at a discounted price of around $100.00. This low price represented a lower Japanese labor rate compared to the $300.00 the Trans Oceanics were selling for. The performance is very similar to the Royal 7000 Trans Oceanic. The selling point of this radio is it has a band spread tuning control which does fairly well in the ham bands. Much better than the Royal 7000. The physical construction is excellent since it mostly a metal case. Unlike the Royal 7000 this radio has continous coverage of the shortwave bands. It is an excellent AM broadcast radio also. It has a very large speaker in the front for full fidelity sound plus the always necessary tone control. It has a push button BFO control for simplicity. All in all, this is a very nice Trans Oceanic clone having its own personalty of chrome and gloss black and substanical weight for a portable just like it should from the 1960's.
