Good Tower - Poor Documentation Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Inherited this tower from a silent key who bought it circa 1985. When purchased new, it was called a Model 8-50 and had an 8 ft sq wind load. It appears identical to the tower Universal now dubs the 4-50, only derated by 50%. Only complaint is with the factory drawings, which show only major dimensions but not details, such as bolt hole sizes. This caused a minor mistep when I erroneously selected a bolt one size too small. Eventually realized my mistake and had to change out every bolt to the next larger size. Once up, the tower is good looking and very rigid. Free standing aluminum is the way to go! This is a "lay over" tower and that feature works very well. You can lower the tower to make repairs, adjustments, etc. rather than climb it. I purposely chose the layover axis in line with a large pine tree. Had the tree trimmer put a sling and pulley up at the 55' elevation. Installed a boat winch at the base of the tree. Now, with the help of an assistant, I can raise or lower the tower in a matter of minutes. (Note, you cannot lower tower all the way since the beam elements would hit the ground).
