The Yaesu FT-7900R Dual Bander operates on 2M and 70CM. High power output is featured with 50 watts on 2 meters and 45 watts on 430 MHz. CTCSS/DCS Encode/Decode is built in. Over 1000 memories are available. It is WIRES compatible. The FT- 7900R well designed front panel provides simple, safe operation. The FT-7900R is ideal for the amateur who does not require cross-band repeat as found on the FT-8800R and FT-8900R. Very Good Overall, Volume Control Sucks! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
My first Yaesu. I am impressed with all of the features and performance of this rig with the exception of the volume control and audio output.

All of the adjustment of the volume seems to be in the first half of the control movement with max volume achieved at about the 1:00 position. From 1:00 to the end of the control travel there is no further increase in volume. I'm curious if other owners noticed this with their rigs.

I'm especially impressed by the bright display, ease of operation and aircraft/220 band receive capability. The addition of the 800mhz band is worthless as everything there (public service), is mostly Apco 25 which the radio is not capable of receiving.

I would prefer this radio over my Icom if it were not for the volume control issue. I'm unsure if all the 7900s have this issue or not. If that's the way it's made, then I can live with it. Hope it's just not my rig.

Excellent Radio for the money Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
I have used this radio for almost a year. I think for the money it is a fantastic buy. I was looking for a simple to use dual band radio I didn't really "need" a radio that does dual monitoring (it would be nice but not necessary) I also needed it to have a remote head unit for vehicle application. This is where I think Yaseu did much better then some of the other compition. The mic itself plugs into the head unit thus allowing you to mount the radio anywhere.
Some other radio's on the market offer a remote face but the mic has to plug into the radio itself, this limiting where you can put the radio. I mounted the Yaesu Ft7900R radio in the back of my sport utility then have the face and mic mounted on the dash...Great Job Yaesu.
I am running a Diamond 770 antenna on fold down mount on the overhead SUV rack and I am able to hit repeaters over 60 miles away, in hilly terrain.
The display is bright and easy to read I would like to better alpha tags perhaps a bit smaller but with more available space.
Programing is not difficult but time consuming so I would highly suggest buying the cable and softwere which makes it a breeze.

Again can't say enough about the radio especially in it's price range.

Excellent package Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I was looking about for a good dual band radio that delivered good power from a decent manafacturer and the FT-7900r ticked all the boxed, From getting the unit out the box i was supprised how small the unit was. The radio was very simple to use and only needed the manual as a referance. Even the mike was easy to operate and had a nice red glow that made it easy to operate in a dark shack. Only thing i would have prefered was to be able to use a PL259 connector instead of a N-type but appart from that small point the radio is fantastic, recieve is excellent and all audio reports have been superb.

A+ for simple menus and simple layout, Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
This is my first radio so I don't have any other ham radios to compare. I was a military helicopter pilot so I am not new to operating radios. The layout and functions are intuitive for a new operator. The radio has great range even on simplex. The scanning features are very helpful and the memory function was easy to program even without a computer cable. I have used it as a base and a mobile with great success. Great first radio for dual band!

Nice Well Built Unit Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Just recently purchased. Every bit as good as my old FT-7800 was. Great sounding audio, if your familiar with Yaesu it's very easy to program. I regreted letting my 7800 go some months back so this one is a keeper. For the PRICE, FEATURE SET, and QUALITY it CANNOT be beat by anyone elses current offerings. Yes it does not have cross band repeat, but for me this is not an issue. You will not go wrong if you decide to go with this radio.

follow up Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
as a follow-up to my previous review the ft-7900 was found to have had a failure in the modulation circuit. watch out for this. my new Icom IC-208H is working fine...

Great Radio Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I got the ft-7900r for christmas and I love it. Before I got the 7900 I had a Ft-50r which was good but no where as good as the 7900. I have the 7900 set up as a base station on our third floor. I am only 12 years old so my opinion probally doesn't mean much, but I love the 7900 and Yaesu.

followup Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Followup... After using the radio for several months now, I still like it but I haven't fully learned to navigate thru all the menus. My older 5100 is easier to do things with. Living in Florida we don't usually get very cold weather but for the last few weeks we had temps down in the low 20's and a potential problem showed up. After a few minutes run time first thing in the morning, the radio would "freak" out and go into a sorta scan mode and the only way to stop it was to power off then back on. It did this more than one time but usually after it did it the one time it would not do it again until the next morning. I will keep an eye out to see if it continues as the weather warms up again.

Fun little dual-bander Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Purchased the 7900R for constructing an IRLP node, and it works very well. The menu setup is easy to understand and changing settings is easy too. The remote mount kit is a nice bonus. This is another great Yaesu product.

Excellent Radio, Excellent Value Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I purchased a FT-7900R while in the U.S. for a four-month stay. It was easy to program, the display is clear and easy to read, and with the removable control head it was easy to install as a mobile. For the price, I feel got a lot of radio. To me this radio is a much better value than what the competition offers. Tim - DU9/KE0Q
