Very nice late 70's shortwave reciever Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
This is a very nice late 70's shortwave receiver with the red digital read out. This is the radio that helped destroy the Zeinth Trans oceanic business. It simply had more features, lower price, than the R-7000 Trans oceanic.
This radio will run on D cell batteries or AC current. The battery operation has been a big benefit to me because I live at a noisy car intersection where the RF ignition noise is many times a problem. This radio is a portable radio but many people would consider it a full size table radio since it's about the same size as a laptop computer. It is still much smaller than it's bigger brother the RF-4900 which is a true table top radio.
The actual performance of this radio is slightly less than the full size RF-4900. The main difference is RF-2800 will overload on strong signals with a long antenna. In every case the problem is solved by turning the RF gain control down and the overload disappears.
This radio compares very well with the Kaito KA1103 sensitivity. The selectivity in the narrow position is much better than the Kaito. All my tests were done on a long wire antenna.
Panasonic did many things right with the RF-2800. Even with batteries in it it is a very light radio. The quality of plastic used in it is excellent. The actual looks are very impressive and military like and looks like the junior version of the RF-4900.
This radio is a pleasure to use and it is my second RF-2800. The first one had dirty switch contacts and the band width control didn't seem like it did much. After about 30 years there seems to be alot of difference in the state of tune in each of these radios. I plan on keeping this radio for a long time and again I say this radio is a pleasure to use.
I was very lucky to buy this radio at a local hamfest for $50.00, I consider this a very good price. Usually this price on e-bay is two or three times this amount.
