General coverage military/shortwave receiver Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
This is just a super radio and a joy to operate. It isn't for everybody. It is approximately 20in. by 20 in. which truly makes it a table top radio. After using an Icom R75 and a Kenwood R5000, which in my opinion, are very minature radios with crowded controls. This is a pleasure to have absolutely no crowding of the front panel and in fact this radio only has three knobs. It has a possibilty of seven filter choices which mine has four and can be used in any mode.
I was able to save a little money by taking the audio out of the front phone jack and connecting it to an Autek QF1A audio filter which has an audio amplifier in it and a good Radio Shack speaker. This avoided what looks like a large RS232 connector piece. I connected the lead in the antenna to the inner connector of the military pin with a small insulated alligator clip which worked perfectly.
This is the best sounding SSB shortwave radio that I've owned. The standard 3.24KHZ filter gives excellent sound and good channel separation.
This radio works very well on the AM broadcast band since it has three tuning rates. It is possible to tune at 1HZ movements if this is what you desire.
For my mental comfort I joined the Yahoo Racal user group, which seems like a very good source of information. Racal sold thousands of these radios to the government and there is still a good supply of parts out there.
This radio sells on ebay for approximatly $250.oo more than a Kenwood R5000. I think this 250.00 represents very good value in today's world.
A couple knit picking dislikes are the black numbers on the LCD read out. This seems strange that other radios at that time had brillant color read outs. The next small dislike is that sometime the small membrane keys stick and the function must be done twice. Both of these are very slight problems.
If you ever wanted to try a modern U.S. government commerical radio this might be a good choice for you. It has all the features I need and has made me very happy.
