Top radio and made to enjoy Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Hello my name is Maurice and Im on my second Mark V having sold my first one but Ill be keeping this one for a long time I hope. I had the original MP before and just loved the receive and transmit audio, I bought the Mark-V because it was new and I felt it was great to start a fresh and not second hand. I am wondering about some of the reports about the receive dying and stuff whats the story here can anyone en-lighten me please? Any one who ones one shoud be proud and enjoy it for what it is, once the menus are set up right for TX audio and the like one should never have to look back, 73s, Maurice, EI9FTB.

Low Band Delight but bad Control Board Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Replaced seasoned 756Pro to improve low band filtering from various area noise sources. Very pleased with results. NB and NR are just vastly superior and offer a lot more weapons that work well. Manual does a good job of explaining how and why these noise eliminators work- Manual also warns about using beverages hooked to RX antenna jack from over-loading RX circuits.......Icom 756Pro manual ignores the problem and has led to mine going to the shop a few times for repair. Really nice to use the Mark V superior built in tuner capable of tuning almost any antenna I've tried in playing around with this thing. Again, this rig's internal tuner is far superior to the 756Pro. Basic menu items are easy to understand with manual study. Down side is how to reach a number of important controls along the bottom of the chassie. Frustrating as the 756Pro most likely has the best "user friendly" panel of any high end rig- I shopped around....considered the Field 1000 but the Mark V just had too many upgrades for the difference in $$$$$. I think the Mark V will be the TS940 of the new century....the Pro2 is a great radio but it lacks the weight to compete with the Mark V and I would not consider them in the same class. If you have the drive to learn how filtering improves your chances of working one in the noise, take the Mark V-

a thinking man's radio Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
This radio has excellent signal reports i receive. One can set the radio to match one's voice and with 200 watts i can now really get through. The receiver and noise reduction is super. Have this radio for over 8 months and so far no problems. I did have the icom proII but this radio blows it away. Only recommendation i would have is for yaesu to have 6 meters build in and to have more then 100 memories. This radio is a keeper. N0JON

GREAT Time Owned: more than 12 months.
All I am going to say is, I have never kept an HF base station longer than a few months before getting tired of it. I have had the MK V for one year now and LOVE IT!!

Great Radio es Service Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I had the radio for 11 months when the power out meter went bad. Sent it to Yaesu and less than two weeks later I had it back fixed perfectly under warranty. The radio is easy to use and once you set the menus everything is controlled on the face of the radio with nice size knobs. The only downside is the filter selection on the face of the radio when in digital mode. You cannot select from 250hz to 500hz without going into the menus. Agn, this is only when in RTTY. I've made many thousands of contacts with this radio in SSB, CW RTTY, PSK31, SSTV even AM es FM with no problems. Used in many contests, DXing, and ragchewing. If I had to buy all over agn I would buy this same radio. I have installed the INRAD 1.8Khz es 250Hz filters to complete the radio.

Love It! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
My husband and I both own a Mark-V. I am working toward my general and use one for code practice.
rx only for now. My husband usese his mark-V almost daily and finds no fault with it. I've only been a ham a couple of years and do a lot of listening on the hf bands. The Mark-V has great audio for all modes. Its become a close friend to me!

Quality Control stinks Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
I own three Yaesu radios. I have had problems with the first and now last Yaesu that I will buy. My 101z had an intermittent short right from the factory. Problems galore. The second radio, a 990 is a jewel. The Mark V cost multiples of either one of these and has had the most problems of all. In my humble opinion, a $2500.00 radio should not need any type of service (warranty or otherwise) in the first 5 years. My view now is that many of the cheaper radios are just as good and most likely trouble free. Its sad to see that Yaesu has completely abandoned its customers too. They are more concerned about telling you what wont be covered than they are making good on what for most of us is a major purchase. From here on out its used moderate priced radios for me. Its sad that you cant even pay new prices and get any sort of consistent quality. There are too may posts here about problems with these units. Yaesu needs some serious help in both customer service behavior and quality control. BUYER BEWARE!!!!

The Only One Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
If you want an all-in-one transceiver that outputs 200 watts, has dual receivers which can be set up to produce true stereo in your headphones, and which can hold its own in challenging contest/QRM environments, then the Yaesu FT-1000MP Mark V is the only choice. Literally. No other transceiver has these features.

Admittedly, it's odd that in 2003 the only rig meeting the above criteria is a fundamentally anaolog receiver, meaning it relies on circuitry that's been around for decades, with some DSP add-ons, but that's the way it is. Icom enthusiasts disparage the Mark V because its circuitry, particularly its DSP implementation, is not as advanced as the PROII. Ten-Tec enthusiasts say wait until the Orion comes along. So be it. (Also, note that Icoms and Ten-Tecs output only 100 watts.) What the Mark V does is give its owner TODAY the maximum performance and features that are available to hams in one (actually two) package(s) at a very reasonable price.

Adopting INRAD filters makes it possible for a CW operator to have at his fingertips twin 1.0 kHz, 500 Hz, and 250 Hz filters. With this kind of flexibility, and with an Inrad 400 Hz filter in the subreceiver, there is little, if anything, an op cannot do in a pile-up or contest. It is a bit much for a ragchew, to be sure, but since used Mark V's go for well under $2,000, it 's tempting to buy one anyway and then gradually add the INRAD as finances permit.

Some conscientious hams have noted key clicks are a problem with MP's (old and new). My Mark V has a keying bandwidth of approximately 1.6 kHz. This is too wide, but at the same time, I would not call it unacceptable. (George at INRAD has developed a fix for the key click problem.)

My transceiver was built in February 2002. It's possible earlier Mark V's had wider CW bandwidths that Yaesu has since worked to reduce and obviously there were QC problems with earlier Mark V's. I have experienced no problems so far. For this and other reasons, I recommend going with a 2002-era model.

My impression is that the Mark V is going to be with us for a very long time.

Best of the best Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have owned this radio now for a yr. and it has never given any problems whatsoever. The receive is just simply put GREAT!. I have the 1000D also and i love it but the analog and digital in the mk5 really comes in handy when trying to hear the weak ones. I have read other reviews on this rig and i find it really hard to swallow about what some of these guys are saying about yaesu service and the rig itself. Just my opinion and thanks for reading 73,s and good DX.
